There absolutely was corruption with in the church. It was run by men, and men as a rule can be corrupted. The catholic FAITH was built on the teachings of the old and new testaments. The corruption stemmed from the political machine the church became. Power and wealth have been corrupting since the dawn of man.

Martin Luther didnt give up the faith, only the politics.

The spanish inquisistion (note the word spanish- it wasnt the whole church) and the crusades were both the result of the abuse of power.
