Just the ignorance of a few americans actually.

I wonder what Harper will say on Feb. 6th about this...he'll probably commend the american army for trying to protect themselves.

pyro, you have no common sense. It was accident that happened because the Canadians did something they shouldn't have, you can't expect the American soldiers to hold their fire after similar situations have killed so many of their fellow troops.

from the article:

"The diplomat, who was not named, said no one in the Canadian vehicles remembered seeing anyone signalling to them."

not that they were not signaled but that they didnt "remember"

the story is wishy washy, alot of assumptions going on. Not first hand eyewitness'. I get skeptical when a story is so vauge. He didnt say "I saw this" or "I saw that"
following the convoy around for five minutes could raise suspicions too. I hope this doent become a Canada v America thing because it would have happened no matter who was behind the wheel

no, i would think that they are humans and not "stupid americans trying to flex their muscles in the middle east when they're not in control". They had a reasonable point to shoot at the car. I'm not going to repeat what has been said. Just look at stackem and nyck's posts.

This doesn't have anything to do with the US Amry specifically, but it describes the mess Iraq is in quite clearly to me.

The diplomat, who was not named, said no one in the Canadian vehicles remembered seeing anyone signalling to them. The first sign they had of a problem was when they heard a booming sound.

Right so canadian drivers don't pay attention?

Well, there's investigations by both countries going on, so I guess we'll have to see what hapen in a few weeks. Sadly, no matter what the US says - its still wrong.

Plenty of Americans have died due to friendly fire. People are upset and want to find out what went wrong, but they rarely call for the soldiers or marines heads. The reason? Accidents happen. The overwhelming majority of troops are Americans, so they will, by virtue of simple probability, be involved in these incidents.

If you think for one second that the soldiers involved knew the parties involved were not a threat and shot anyway, you're nuts.

You can bet your ass I'd be a little trigger happy if I were in Iraq. Its a matter of self-preservation not some American power trip. Add to that the fact that most of the soldiers are young guys who have probably heard about or seen first-hand what can happen if you let your guard down.

Let those among you who have not TK'd accidentally cast the first stone.

I've read all the posts in this thread - and quite frankly NONE of you, me included, can seriously comment on what happened because none of us were there.

That's why they are INVESTIGATING it, instead of debating it over the internet with information gathered from sources who also WEREN'T THERE.

Assumptions we can safely make:

* American soldiers involved didn't know it was a friendly.

* Canadians didn't see the warning signal. (Honestly, why would they lie about that)

In war, and in peace, there are mistakes and misunderstandings. I'm sure we can all agree that was all this was. People like Pyro need to stop taking things like this personally, and honestly some of you Americans need to stop acting so self-righteous about stuff that goes on 'over there.'

I agree whole heartedly with everything that you've said. I'll be the first to admit that this country is chock full of flaming assholes with a portion of those assholes serving in the military. Keep in mind though, that they're our assholes and when people throw out the bait, with anti-American comments, someone is going to bite. Many of us have friends or relatives who are either in Iraq or who have been there. I can't say that there are too many happy to have had the experience.
