Default Have some questions..... - 03-29-2003, 11:10 AM

I want to make my other computer into a server...but how many people u think can play on a 1.7ghz and 128mb sdram dedicated server?? how much more ram u think i will need to hold around 18-24 without any lag? and it is possible to make the server lan and online so i can connect through lan so the bandwith of the cable connection wont be taken up?and i have p4 for the cpu....

You can connect through LAN, but a cable connection doesn't have enough bandwidth to host very many people. I would say maybe 8 comfortably if you have a decent connection.

What can I say, I'm a hopeless optimist.

Its more so to do with your net connection than the speed of your pc, if you're running a 1.4 ghz pc you can probably host 16 players or more with a good frame rate on a t1 line. However try this on a 1mbit connection and if the players are any real distance away theyre gonna be lagging like hell.

No matter how fast your PC is, with a standard 1.5mb cable connection, you only get about 245kb upload. This is where the problem lies, you'll only be able to host about 4 people before the pings shoot through the roof. No way around this unless you have access to higher bandwidth services.

i dunno if u missed it hollywood but i said that i could host 18 people with no lag and on non-dedicated....im just tryin to do this on my computer but it is slower so wondering how people it can handle...and if i could make the server so that i can connect on lan with my other comp but also so the server could be online too....and i get 1 mb upload too i know that those sites are moment speed connection thingy(bandwith tests sites) but i tested it over and over and i got 1mb upload and 1.5+ for download...

Get a 10mbit connection like me, then there will be no probs what so ever. 32 ppl with an average ping round 10-60 ^_^

Default HIGH PING - 03-29-2003, 12:35 PM

i keep hearing this: you cant host a game with very many people on a cable connection. ive been running a server on my pc with a cable connection for up to 15 players for a year. ive had as many as 15 at a time with no complaints of lag. i run autokick set to kick at 200. maybe thats the secret i dont know but it works well for me and my regulars.i will say on certian nights itll lag a bit for a few players but for the most part it works fine. ive even modded all the moh maps with vehicles, fire, smoke, machine guns. and i run a form of the old ultra mod. so a lot of the game comes from my pc yet we dont have a problem. so i would tell you to try it and see how it goes. i run a P4 1.8..1 GIG OF DDR MEMORY..RADEON 9700 PRO VIDEO CARD..on a cable connection.

Any server will run okay, as long as you keep the 56kers off........

thats what the auto kick does for you. if you set it low enough only the fastest connections can hang in the game without getting kicked.
