what the fuck. driving experience. I dunno about your experiences, but mine are fucking driving with 100s of cars around on the interstate, untill I get to a traffic jam. then I sit in it doing 5-10 miles per hour for about 10 minutes
then I drive to the grocery store on occasion. none by the way are on winding roads with beautiful nature and freshly fallen leaves blowing behind me on the road as I drive past them.
The dude doesnt want to constantly shift. big fucking deal.

I don't see the big deal about manual either. Automatic was made for a reaso: it's easier and more convenient. Why should people deny themselves those comforts? Do all you who only drive manuals light your houses with kerosene lamps too? Or do you only inconvenience yourself by not partaking of current technology in the automotive part of your life?

Ok asshats, here's the deal with transmissions. If you're driving an everyday car, auto is the way to go. If you have a weekend sports car, manual is the ticket.
If you're drag racing for money, auto is the key to winning. If you're racing on a road course, manual is what you'd want.
Arkans everyday car is an auto. No need to keep shifting while i'm either stuck in traffic or fumbling with my food. My Shelby mustang however will be a manual trans. Car is only coming out on my off days during nice weather.
Oh, 1 more thing.....if you live in the snow belt, auto is alot better.
This should cease all debate over auto Vs manual. All the answers are above ^^^

I agree, only because you can get a better start off the line with an auto, but you can launch just as hard with a manual. I agree sitting in traffic with a manual is tedious and annoying, but if you don't mind it (like me) its not a huge deal. My dad always says dont get a manual they are stupid (he use to have them but he got old and annoyed with them) i tell him i'm young and i enjoy shifting gears more than just sitting there. Its personal prefernce, but i'm going the manual route this time around.

I sit in traffic all the time with man manual. Its nice to not have to have your foot on the brake when just sitting there, and since your used to doing things with your right arm it comes naturally to pop it into neutral. Rather than an auto where you can, but you always forget, and it always seems to jerk a bit when going back and forth between the two. Then theres hills... I will never own an auto for this very reason... Going up a hill the fucking things can NEVER decide what gear they want. You'll be in 4th, and you'll be decellerating, so it'll go back to 3rd and rev up and get you back up to speed, only to shift back to 4th and start decellerating again. I know of more than 5 hills this annoyance ALWAYS accures. Doesnt matter what car it was, if it was auto it did this. Meanwhile my stick i can just leave in 5th and have no issue with any of them.
Dont even get me started on the throttle response. If im drivng on the freeway and i stab the gas i expect the fucker to drop a gear and go, no hesitation. What do i get, 3 seconds of lag while the tranny decides what it wants to do. Meanwhile my foots on the floor and im waiting. Then it does it and it jerks like nothing else as the revs sky rocket. My uncles Hemi Ram 1500 was fast as hell, unless you stabbed the gas, do that and prepare to wait, at any speed, even standing still. The dealer even said he should replace the stock chip to better manage the power, and lower the response.
Most people probably dont notice it, they just go from point a to point b and just want to be there. Id prefer to enjoy the trip and perhaps be naughty along the way. I find a manual best provides for that "weekend racer" i get from time to time... Ok, more often than not.
That and i do tend to get bored city driving with an auto.

miscguy, you are forgetting that this has the manual mode which pretty much just goes agaist with everything you just said. you want to go into 4th gear and stay into fourth gear? hit it to the right and you wont change gears until you decide to change gears.

Not really, since my sisters car has that same thing. It just seems like when you drive an auto you forget about these features. Not to mention that running in 3rd at freeway speeds up those hills dosnt exactally produce a high milage machine.

I rented a Mazda 6 this summer in Newfoundland and really enjoyed the tiptronic setup it had. Gives you the best of both worlds, sorta...you can shift gears, but there's no clutch.
It was a neat little gadget, but not something I'd use all the time. I don't drive for the thrill of driving. I drive like an old woman.

have you guys ever seen the car design where it was a manual transmission but instead of the classic gear shifter, it had a little button that you press on the side of the steering wheel. I saw it at an auto show one time, but i can't remember the model of the car that had it.
