I recently bought a new computer and it costs around $2700. I built it for Battlefield 1942 and seeing the hardware requirements for spearhead my GF2mx400 and P3 couldnt handle it.

Ouch, that's expensive. My 800 dollar comp runs BF42 like a dream, high details, AA and Anisotropic filtering on, etc...

I feel a GREAT swell of pity for you if that setup cost you 2700 bucks.

Default Build your own??? - 11-12-2002, 01:51 PM

By the time you build your own you could have bought a cheaper
computer from Dell with the exact same components

Check this one out
http://www.dell.com/us/en/dhs/offers/sp ... cial61.htm

Or These
http://www.dell.com/us/en/dhs/products/ ... sktops.htm

When you order a dell box, just MAKE SURE that there are no
"Integrated" components. You want an individual CARD for every
component in the box. sometimes their specials will integrate
a NIC card or sound card on the motherboard - you dont want this

Also tell them NOT to install ANYTHING other than the O.S. and
the microsoft bundle. Dont get ANY other software from them
most of it will just clutter your computer up and slow it down

Compare the actual price of building one and the price to buy a Dell
you will see it is very close in price. Good luck with support when
you build your own box.....

No you can't. You can buy something thats comparable in cost from dell but built with extremely inferior components. Sure, you'll get a decent processor and vid card, perhaps, but what about items like the motherboard, RAM, cooling, the case, HD, etc etc. They don't use quality items there, they use cheap products to increase their profit....

Maybe on a high end box, they'd be closer to quality components. But not really. Let me assure you the cost of components in the most expensive dell right now is less then 2000 bucks. Does Dell sell if for less then that?? Nope. So you're wrong...

In the Dell boxes under 1000 bucks, where they are comparably priced to a build your own job, the parts they use are straight crap.

Perhaps you could grow up and post maturely, instead of insulting someone when they present an intelligent arguement to something you say.

Uhhhh - DELL? Gimme a break.

800 bucks for a computer?

Get yourself a combo MOBO/CPU AMD 2100 XP - thats what 250?

Hard Drive - Bare 120 GIG, 2mb Buffer - 120 bucks for one.

nVidia GeForce4 4200, LeadTEK - 200.

CD-RW - If you get anything over a 24 write speed, considering NO CD's can be written that fast, you should be shot. Cheap - 50-60 bucks.

Memory - DDR, 512 - 100 I believe.

So thats about 630 right there, with 170 left to spend on SOUND CARDS (god) and whatever else you want. And that's retail prices. You know how much MORE you could save with PRICEWATCH, or ever freaking EBAY?

Prebuilt means more for parts and labor, for the "high-end" stuff you MUST have. What a joke. Never, EVER, will I buy a pre-built computer.

And no costumer support? Please. If I have a problem I sure as hell am contacting my equipments maker.

And of course a NIC card, but what MOBO DOESN'T come with one.

Well, 512 of higher speed DDR is about 200...which leaves you around 70 to spend on misc. stuff. And there actually are a lot of AMD mobos that don't have a NIC onboard still.

A lot of that 70 bucks goes to shipping...so there ya go, you just described the AMD computer I'm talking about. Some people insist on Intel, and I figure you end up spending 150 to 250 more on an Intel machine, for the same performance.

And a note on pricewatch and ebay...why gamble that you're gonna get totally screwed (which a lot of pricewatch companies do) do save 20 bucks?? Cross reference pricewatch with http://www.resellerratings.com or just do what everyone else does, and buy from http://www.newegg.com. Then you know you won't get screwed.

Lol yea. That's true. Personally, I wouldn't mess with EBAY since I've screwed some people, especially on shipping charges (which is where ALOT of online companies through EBAY make up their "low low prices").

And, what ALOT of people seem to gorget, is that you can EASILY recycle your old components from your previous computer. As someone told me, do you REALLY need to have more than one computer? Is it so hard to do work on one, and gaming on the other.

Hard drives, Ethernet cards, sound cards, CD-drives - all of these things can be recycled from one rig to the other. It's just that easy.

Man, what I would do with just 800 bucks. And after I paid the girl, I'd go out and get me some new crap for my computer.

newegg rocks ---- dell sucks

How about dell using POS mobo/power supply combos that dont work anywhere else. Try to upgrade to a gf4 and it doesnt work because the power supply is too wimpy. Go buy new ps - the universal standard for intel or amd and it doesnt work with your mobo because dell saved $4 a pc.

I just built a new box with top of the line components for $700. Everything new except for video card and cpu coooler. If I were to put in a 9700pro and a op of the line cooler, the sytem would come in at $1100. Dell cant touch my pc at that price. And no, I dont need windows, a keyboard/mouse/monitor or a pos printer or digital camera. I want my money to go to the best pc for the money, not the extras.

xp2200
512 ddr3200
40 gb 7200 rpm 8mb cache hdd
48x12x48 liteon
sony floppy
thermal take case fansx2
350w ps and case
8x agp, kt400 asus mobo, onboard lan, usb2.0x6

Its got all the necessaries and lots of room to upgrade.

rounded ide/floppy cables

Build your own. You'll have a lot more hardware options that way. Besides, if something should go wrong you'll be better equipped to handle it yourself.

EDIT: I also recommend newegg.com. I just got my components today from them. The price was right and they delivered on time. So far no complaints.

Uh...I've got CDs sitting at home right now that can be written at 48x. They're TDK, made for their VeloCD burners.

All my ultra cheap cds say 32x and my 48x burner only cost $10 more than your 24x.
