why partition your 8 GB hdd into 4 2gb portions when you could have one 8 GB partition?

In the days before rewritable media the only (cheap) way to keep data when (and I mean when) the OS crashed and brought down your drive was to partition the HD. To date I have reinstalled several OS's several times over and thank myself several times over.
