Bean 2, I was thinking about going to college and then the Marines but I said fuck that and just signed up. College can always come later and there is always a chance I might just make a career out of the Marines as enlisted. Veterans always told me they respect Officers who went enlisted first and then went Officer. So that's what I'm doing.[/quote:16065]
I'd ask about nrotc marine option scholarships and go to college before you join the marines, because after spending 4-6 years in the corps (or longer) you might not be up for college, not to mention you will have forgotten everything you learned in high school. You got a fucking 1210 on your sat so your in good shape i only got an 1170 and i got it, but you better hurry the last nrotc marine option scholarship board meets the end of this month, so you better hurry your ass up. As for getting more respect out of doing enlisted first...it might be true, but if your a good officer and can relate to your men, then you will have their respect.
EDIT:
Almost forgot...if you arent in good shape then u probably should forget about the nrotc scholarship you gotta perform well on the pft as part of the scholarship requirement...the pft consists of 3 mile run, pull ups, and crunches, studs like me have no problem cause their looking for the scholar/athlete type like myself, if your not doing at least a 23 minute 3 mile, 10 pull ups, and 90 crunches....or at least something close to that....you probably should forget it. (btw i did 12 pull ups, 19 minute 3 mile, and 107 crunches so you know the competetion.)

Uhh... what's the point of going to college and then spending 4-6 years in the Marines, or longer. When you get out you'll most likely not remember half the matieral you've learned in high school or college combined.
Might be true? IT IS TRUE, believe me. Go up to any enlisted Marine and ask them whether they think that Marine officers should go thru the same training and bullshit before they become one and come back here and tell me what they say. Better yet ask an Officer and tell me what they say to you. Most Officers come in with a chip on the shoulder but later get back handed by the Gunny or First Sergeant and they straighten up. They are green when they come in and seek to the NCOs for help. It happens all the time, same with the past and in the present.
It's common sense when you think about it. Going enlisted and getting the experiencing the same shit as the men that you are leading will give you the experience and will to lead those men the RIGHT way. Plus with being a peon on your record it will show you you have the right determination to rise thru the ranks.
Officers give orders in battle, the NCO executes the orders and leads men into battle. happy:
BEAN2: It's generally hard to put twent years in as in Officer if you were every thinking about making a career out of it. Most Officers are forced out at Captain because they can't find an opening. If I put six years in as enlisted, and then put the rest as Officer I'll be set for a twenty year retirement biggrin:

Hmm, I would really think about this before I commited. If you want to make a carrer out of it maybe, but otherwise it's a big chunk of your life. Im thiking of joining the Air Force, but I am not sure, it's just such a big commitment.

Bean ,
Millitary Service will be one of the most awsome experiances of your life , go for it , and go for ALL of it.
Listen to Zap and Eames they know what they are talking about.
I did my 4 in the Army and I can tell you , once you get out you will be fine.
You can do college or whatever you want. You will never have a problem getting a job AGAIN.
Best of luck.
We sure do have alot of guys going marine around here , I feel like the weak guy....lol.
Well yesterday I get a phone call from the Marine recruiters asking me if I wanted to get picked up and takin to their office to discuss some things. They pick me up at around 12 and we start talking about stuff. We talked for about 15 mins about which is better, x-box or PS2 lol. Then when we get to the place the head marine asks me what I got on my SAT and asvab so i told him what i got on SAT and told him that i never got my asvab score. So he says that im a pretty smart guy and something about that ill probably be Alpha. I have no idea what being Alpha means so if anyone could tell me please do. So we continue to talk and he tells me something about PLC which is Platoon Leader Class which sounds like a really good idea for anyone who is considering both college and the marines. So this is what im considering now. You get to choose wether you want to do Ground, Air, or Law training. Im probably gonna do Air if i qualify. Any thoughts on the matter?[/quote:22f9a]
Go Army, not Marines.

It breaks down like this :
If you want a low-impact just see the world and not worry about being killed.
Navy is your branch.
If you want High Tech , College , great housing , and a minimal chance of getting killed.
Air Force is your branch.
If you want to fire Rocket Launchers and M-60s , and work out ever day , with a good chance of seeing combat.
Army is your branch.
If you want to do the kick ass spec ops shit on a dailly basis and see combat for certain.
Marines is your branch.
Nobody freak on me , each branch has special forces and cooks , it will depend on what your job is and where you are stationed. This is just a VERY General assesment.

all the rotc kids at pitt are wierd
we jus kinda laugh cuz they walk around in uniform like they were on a military base, and the rotc guys only get rotc girls, if anything....
im cool with the drill sgt. for rotc marines, he's a beast and he's kinda cool, but at the same time he is a tool and he gets 0 females...
but military service is an easy way to get a LOT of power, and as zen said it will be the experience of a lifetime for you (as long as thats your thing, in my opinion), but if you do rotc, its true and everyone around here knows it, you will get rocked by early morning daily pt.
-salutes-
good luck, soldier

Do the Marines call up random people or what? & what's with all this driving you everywhere? I gotta travel my own way if I have to see the Navy, the most they will give me is a travel warrant mad:

When I was in High School as a junior (I'm 30 now) I signed up to go into the Air Force and was in their DEP program. About a month or so later after getting into the program I got a drunk driving and got booted from there. The next day or so, the Marine recruiter contacted me and I was hooked. I learned how to do my current job there. (Network Admin). It's tough, but you gain so much more self respect for yourself and have a ton of confidence to do whatever it is you want to do. You can go to college while you're in the Corps if you choose. They use to pay for some of it. I don't know if they still do. After all these years, I'm glad I went into the Marines rather than the AIr Force.

Yeah, I was a junior in H.S. when I got my drunk driving. A month or so later I was told by the Air Force recruiter that they didn't want me anymore. I even got a discharge paper from them. Go figure, a junior in H.S. get discharged from the Air Force before even serving a day in it. I'll have to see if I still have the papers.
