I emailed the guy who wrote it. Here's what I typed up pretty quickly if anyone's interested:
[quote:52d0b]Mr. Kelly:
Your "Bertuzzi a product of hockey's culture" article is just ridiculous. You have stated that to intent to seek our and "physically harm him, and doing so from behind" is a "Canadian thing". I really can't understand that. You do know the majority of players are Canadian, since you stated it in your article. Therefore when an incident takes place it is more likely that it will have involved a Canadian player. But don't tell me that an American, European or player of any other nation isn't capable of making a similar mistake.
"Bertuzzi's behaviour is typical of the hockey culture in Canada". Are you serious? I don't even know what to say to this. Your column is just absolutely ridiculous. Bertuzzi's actions are not "typical" of Canada or any other nation. I really don't know what you were thinking there. And what is with "a country that has long claimed the game as its own"? Another uninformed and ignorant comment. Canada has never "claimed" hockey as its own, we merely embrace it. We enjoy it, we play it. The United States has failed to do any of that. How is that claiming hockey for ourselves? Canadians grow up with the game.
Your logic really doesn't make any sense. How do you explain Oliwa leading the league in Fighting Majors? The system is different from country to country, but Canada doesn’t instruct players to sucker punch use the stick as a weapon or anything else illegal or immoral in the NHL. Your article angered me very much. I do hope that not everyone reading your article buys into your “opinion”.
Blaming the system in Canada for Bertuzzi's actions is taking the easy way out.
