I primarily use a Remington 700 Series .308 for hunting and medium-range target shooting, although for some the .308 round is a bit too much. The CAR-15 is a nice firearm, and is fun to take out to the firing range, as is the M4A1, if you happen to get permission to use one at a police firing range.

As for handguns, you have many options. Sig-Sauer and Glock remain my two favorite manufacturers, but you can't go wrong with a HK USP .45 ACP, although many beginners find that the .45 ACP takes a good amount of practice before you can effectively hit a target. .40 rounds are more forgiving, but the true beginner-friendly handgun caliber is the 9mm. The Glock 17 and 19 and the Sig P220 are nice handguns to start out with. If you don't want to spend $600-800 on a handgun, then go with a Walther P22, which is around $300.

I have an 1873 Colt SAA, and I love shooting that just for fun. I also have the Sig P220, and it's an excellent handgun.

My dad has a few pistols including the Smith&Wesson 500 magnum. That thing is huge. I'll post some pics of his collection sometime soon.

I don't suppose you were looking into getting any shotguns, but in case you did, go with the Benelli M3 Super 90. It's a bit pricy, but overall I think it's the best shotgun for a generic all-around purpose. It can be used for defense purposes or it is excellent for competition or hunting purposes.

If you have enough money, and know you can handle large caliber handguns, then look into the Colt Mark V Anaconda. It's a blast to use.

I decided to go with the 2 Norincos for price (easy to start with) and follow with
a Glock 22 and (when money isn't a problem) finally, a USP. I'm also looking at an
M4 type semi-automatic rifle (can't have autos in Canada): suggestions?

Canadian-made Diemaco C8 is very similar to the US Colt M4, but it has full-auto capability and thus wouldn't be available for civilian use. Most true semi-auto assault rifles are older rifles, such as the Russian-made SKS. Unless you can find a custom-chambered M4 or M4A1 which I would guess is very hard if not impossible to find. The actual M4 fires single and 3-round shots, while the M4A1 fires full auto, so I don't know what kind of semi-auto laws Canada would accept.

back to topic:

the first thing you must do is take some kind of course to teach you how to handle a weapon. Then start with a .22 rifle. If you start you will become addicted. Shooting can be a very fun (&safe) sport

the only gun i have left is a M44 Mosin Nagant rifle. i had a relative in the civil war and used to have his navy colt revolver, but my grandma took it back and gave it to some distant relative. she let me keep the sword though.

so far, i've only fired a .22 pistol, a .45 colt 1911, m4 carabine single shot, and an m1 carabine. i personaly love the m1 carabine.

Is this correct:

Basically you have to get your non-restriced firearms licence, then your restricted firearms licence and then i can buy a pistol in Canada?

I've fired many different prohibited weapons in the army, but they don't give out licences for them. Too bad.

I don't have any civilian licences for firearms, but i'm interested in doing so. Why do you want these pistols soli?
