I should mention that the two sigs I posted are not mine. They were made by Zone & MS at LW. To show you some of the effects I have used, I'll use my own work:

Blur/Motion effect is just as simple as Judas & Static mentioned. Duplicate layer + blur. Season to taste.

Font choice is always important, but here is a good example of color use:

You'll notice that the text colors choosen are colors from the sig. Gold and Silver from the two helments. It adds a little flavor to the text, and blends well because the colors are from the source pics.
I get the exact color by using the "eyedropper" tool.

Now, I like pixel fonts because they are very clear at small sizes, and I often like to add small "extra" text for effect. Here is an example of a pixel font with a blue outer glow.... However, I set the outer glow to disolve:

I like to make my colors blend well, and flow with each other...expecially when I want my sig to work as a single "whole" image. I like to use an "advertisement" style... look at the label of those chips next to your keyboard for an example, lol.

Here is another use of color based on the colors in the sig, except with this one, I simply turned the second pixel text upside-down (Ctrl + T)

That's all pretty basic, but you can use that kind of stuff in a thousand different ways. Here are a few more complex concepts:

You can apply a gradient or texture to your text, but the inside effects work best on large and thick text.

Download lots and use a variety. The better you know them, the better you will be able to realize what works best in each case. I use lots of fonts...even though I do use plenty of pixel fonts, I'm always consious of whether or not the font belongs.
