custom built but my dad just bought it from some store, no box, no os disc, no nothing just the computer, its about 2 1/2 to 3 years old

Yeah, those are easy to find in the system options. Its the Mobo thats trickier. Dont really know if theres any way to find out in the system ops or anything like that, I think you kight have to open the case and look for a name on the board itself.

see if you can get a part # off the motherboard, then google it. youll get all you need to know about the mb. the 420 power supply should be prlenty good for both current and future upgrades

Download CPU-Z, it will tell you everything you need to know about your CPU, RAM, and motherboard.

I recommend you grab a 6600GT over the 9800 Pro, it's way faster especially with AA/AF on.

That thermaltake PSU is complete shit. Do not get that. Get 400W+ from PCP&C, SeaSonic, Enermax, Fortron or Antec.

DO NOT BUY AN EVGA 6600 AGP! I've dealt with so much bullshit from that card. A shitty fan, and a shitty heatsink with poor application of poor quality thermal gel.

Go with BFG or Galaxy.

I wouldn't trust Galaxy with a $200 investment.

BFG is the best of the best. eVGA is usually good (but apparently not always, but I know my next purchase will be from them since they added Lifetime Warrenty, plus the Step Up program and they usually have the best prices), Leadtek, XFX, and PNY are good manufacturers too.

I'm not much of a fan of Galaxy either but Guru gave them high marks. Plus the fan and heatsink seem way better than that on my eVGA 6600, but like you BFG is the best of the best, PNY would be my second choice, then XFX.

I wish I had a camera so I could have taken a picture of the application of the heatsink gel. It's like someone got a glob of it on their hand and just smeard it on the HSI chip and GPU, I spent nearly 30 minutes cleaning it all off before I put on my new fan from Zalman. Just to give you an idea of how shitty the old fan was...

I couldn't play any thing on medium or high settings, it had to be the lowest becuase the precious thing would overheat causing crashes and horrible artifacts. With the Arctic 5 gel I put on and the new VF-700Cu I was able to OC the card with Auto-Detect from 300mhz/900mhz to 3D Performance on 610mhz/1.1ghz and I can run Rome Total War with 8x/16x on 1152x864 with all high and huge number of units on screen with ZERO problems.

So basically the moral of all that was buy eVGA if you want to replace the fan, or just go with somthing already solid like BFG, PNY, XFX, or Galaxy.
