So tell me how is your comment much more relevent to the thread? He said he needs a laptop instead of his desktop because of his lack of space or "inpractablility" in his dorm room.

Actually laptop sales this year have far surpassed desktop sales. Seems to be a lot of innovation going on in the tech for laptops, theyre more or less capable of rivaling desktops as gaming machines these days.
i'm talking economical in the sense of upgrading. Unless you sign up for a good trade-in deal, the whole machine will be out of date soon enough while with a desktop, you take swap parts out easily.
You can swap parts out of laptops as well, cpu, ram drives, some even have upgradable graphics now.
Well desktops definitely cost less if that's what he ment. $3000 laptop can usually get raped by a $1200 desktop.
