the shuttles are such an inefficient means of transport. if they want to continue the program they're going to need a much more advanced fleet. that being said i'd love to take a ride on one.

when the shuttle is in earth orbit it will be traveling at 17,000miles/hour.
that's only 4.7 miles per second whle the speed of light is around 186,000 miles/second, contrary to CNN stating that the space shuttle travels at 18X the spped of light.
4.7 miles/sec seems fast, but on an interstellar scale, this is painfully slow.

Well, now my buddy can come home. He's a parajumper and got deployed to Florida for the launch. Everytime they launch from the east coast, he gets deployed for possible rescue/recovery operations.
