The maladaptation in the higher IQ population is generally caused by a lack of appropriate interaction with other people. The cognitive elite have about as much difficulty engaging in stimulating/worthwhile discussion with the average person as the average person would with mentally retarded (2 standard deviations below their IQ) individuals. A lot can do just fine, but most either have not practiced enough (and are not cognizant of social etiquette, thereby making them appear odd) or simply don't care to expend any energy in what they deem a pointless endeavor.
