Meh, down here in the south, if you play anything other than football, nobody gives a shit. You can play basketball and baseball, but you can only get away with it if you play football as well. I would assume that's how it is around Ohio, Iowa, Michigan, etc.

Don't play a sport because you think it'll make you popular. Play it because you like it and you think you'd be good at it.
