nobody is saying you are a crazy....just guilty of being typically young...full 'o beans and Gung-ho!

remeber...there are lots of graveyards full of American kids who came 2nd to the other guy who wanted to "fight for his country".......there are lots of better ways to do this...ones that are very productive and won't get you killed.

When you are young and playing wargames it's easy to think you can pull the trigger on a man.....and the veteran's hsopitals are full of guys haunted by doing exacly that. You gotta live with it FOREVER........

When you get older you'll understand....

You know, there are ways to do something for your country that won't get you killed. Donate money to the september 11th fund! If you were older, I'd suggest donating blood. There are people in your state that could use support, I 'm sure. America is the land of the free, home of the brave. Not swamp of the suicidal, grave of the dead.

Also, I'm only 13 years old, and I'm embarrased to see all of these run on sentences from high schoolers. Seeing you 14 year olds writing like that just makes me sick. Is this what they teach freshman?

Not only soldiers would have died. Mass suicide was going on with civilians, as I understand it.Women & children were jumping off cliffs.People hanged themselves. I cant remember exactly why, but I think it was cuz of their religion/beliefs.

Yes Great respect to those men that falled at the combat 1944 .. It takes so many deep breaths to get trough few MG-42 and heavy artillery..

hi,i have absolutely nothing against young guys who want to join the army so feel free to do it (especially since you have "no other abilities) but i really can't understand why you want WAR,for christ's sake.i agree with the guy that made suggestion that you should donate money to charities if you want to do something for your country.
and you may say that you're not brainwashed by movies but i don't believe you.i'd recommend you to watch documentations about war veterans or maybe even talk to a veteran.it might be true that there's a special kind of atmosphere when you're in a war,having a break with your comrades but never forget that you never come back from a battlefield (IF you survived the battle!) the same way you entered it.

P.S. i'm not sure if you get the idea behind my words for i'm not a native english-speaking...sorry for that

Actually Flammenwerfer, it's very well written, better than many of the Canadian and Americans writing here (a flaw in our educational system perhaps??). Anyway, it's agreed that you can't leave a battlefield intact (at least not emotionally or psychologically). I for one can at least give Rickets the benefit of the doubt and if he says he's not brainwashed by games and hollywood then perhaps he isn't. Who are we to say so. I know several people who are in the military, including my father, who are not brainwashed or even into killing. Most wackos wouldn't get through the psychological profiling to begin with. Anyway, if he wants to join the Military and serve his country in that way, who are we to discourage him. If wasn't for a lot of people wanting to serve their countries in more dangerous times (WW1, WW2, Vietnam, Korea, etc..) then where would we all be now? However Rickets, the military is a difficult and demanding career choice, you must choose to leave a lot of yourself behind, and work your ass off. You must also be able to handle being ordered about daily without question or reservation, it's not for everyone. By the way, are you on the OFP forum (Black Knight)?

Omaha, in fact all of Normandy is a fabulous place. There are still bunkers to see....the cratered landscape hidden under dune stabilisation foliage.....memorials everywhere.

To mention the other side (and no...I am not a Nazi...just a historian...:-)
I had an original funeral card for a young panzer soldier killed around D-Day +6 so I went and foundf his grave in the German cemetary in La Cambe. He is a few blocks from Michael Wittmann's grave. It was very moving...as the card has a picture of him on it.

There are lots of things to see...right through Normandy.....and it is well worth the trip!

I have visited the island of Corregidor in the Philippines in the early 80's. I know the feelings of great awe, & the feelings of respect you are talking about. The island is pretty much unchanged since the early 40's also. The bombed out barracks, the emplacements of the huge guns, the bunkers, etc. The tunnels were sealed off was about the only thing changed.

I remember going down into bunkers & passageways & seeing the walls still pockmarked from machinegun fire. Really sends chills through you.

I think what made the most impression on me was seeing one of the huge 12 inch mortars (13 tons) hurled 150 yards from where it was originally, when a Japanese bombardment set off 1600 bags of 63lb. powder charges.

I got a book with pics. I wish I could get my ancient scanner working...

my every male and a few females in my family have either served in military or police force since WWI, its kinda my family haritage, and dont get me wrong im not stupid, i could hold a desk job, i just wouldn't want 2. i have seen war documentary's and i have books, very graphic books from WWII and NAM, i dont know, i guess im just looking for the brotherhood and close bonding that solders share with each other, ive never really been close 2 somone and would like to be able to have a fun career as well, and thank you for not criticising me further (whoever it was that gave me the benifit of the doubt)im not crazy and i do know (not personally) but i know of the horible things that happen in war, i would much rather talk to a veteran than a girl, damn... you all know when u were little kids u would make stick guns and run around and shoot ur freinds and blah blah, well i guess i never eally grew out of that, and thats who i am. wow this post has taken a huge turn from the "omaha respect" thing it started out as, and whoever started this post, you are hella cool! anyways, if this makes anysense 2 u guys at all ,thanks for understanding. i guess i leave u with "Im not praying for war, but im training for one, and if there is one, il be the first to get up and go"....
