I had a 233mhz with dsl for a long time, and i still was a "victim" in every game I played. Once I upgraded I was the "victimizer". I upgraded over time at such a minimal cost too. The only thing original from my original comp is the monitor and a fan that I got aimed at my geforce2. So in short- shitty comp + cable = shitty comp with cable http://personal.mia.bellsouth.net/mi...aboey/capn.jpg |
Capt Crunch has it in one. Upgrade your PC first. I have an average system (Duron 700, 384mb ram), with a lame Voodoo3 gfx card. I have cable.
In a decent server I get between 20-60 ping and still my fps in a fight goes below 15. So long as your fps is under 25 it's not smooth-to-the-eye gaming, no matter what yer ping is. Cable can deliver information much faster than 25 fps, but once it hits your CPU and GFX card and they are old, then it slows right up there. First thing to do is to upgrade cpu and mother board. I'd go for an Athlon 1.2 GHZ with A-bit K7 motherboard (£200 for the two, you won't need to upgrade for a long time. Then buy the generic geforce 2 32mb gfx card, then buy more ram. Then get cable, if you can. Just upgrading your motherboard and cpu will deliver much better performance than before, but you do need a decent gfx card also, other-wise it bottle-necks there. Yeh, it's bloody expensive, but once you have cable you never need to dial up again, can use the internet whenever ya like and can download stuff super-fast. Everything becomes more fun then, not just MoH. Also, learn how to build your own PC... it's MUCH cheaper and is really easy (just like lego) http://www.alliedassault.com/ubb/smile.gif |
yeah, even with an internet accelerator most 56ks wont download over 5kb a sec and tweaking your modem doesnt do all that much to lower pings. get the cable.
|
actually 1st double your ram, that right there will boost ya alot for cheap. Then when ya get a new motherboard(i bought an amd 800mhz for $85) you just plop in your ram. Then hook up with a new generic geforce.
you could have a decent system for $19 128mb ram $85 amd 800mhz $49(after rebate) Xtasy geforce2 32mb ----- $153 Thats pretty cheap for a mid-grade upgrade in my opinion and if ya need instalation help add another $100 http://personal.mia.bellsouth.net/mi...aboey/capn.jpg |
Malarkey, although i have a good system i understand your plight.
I have an Athlon 500, 256 RAM, GeForce2 Pro. But still my sytems chokes on MOH. Crazy. Progress has to go on. But we can be smart with what we get. There are other games out there that will still provide you fun with out the lag problems. For example Hidden & Dangerous (H&D), H&D2(release summer 2002), Battlefield 1942 (BF1942, release summer 2002 from EA). These games that I know about can be played over 56k very well. I played H&D with my friend on 56k and he was 5000 miles away. If you play locally then it's even better. H&D can be bought for less than $20. It has Coop play with up to 4 players. H&D2 I think is Coop with up to 6 players. BF1942 is like MOH but with more action with lots of vehicles (Planes, bombers, tanks,Battleships, Carriers, APCs, AA guns, Submarines) and Coop with 4 players, 64player MP. The one unique thing about Bf though is that nothing is scripted. Its all AI based so each time you play a mission the enemy and the friendlies will do different things, so its got great replay-ability(is that a word?). But then that might eat some CPU cycles off your system. http://www.alliedassault.com/ubb/smile.gif Both of these games are WWII based and are/will be lots of fun. MOH is good, but the lack of Coop (provided from developer), Lag (I have DSL), and how graphics intensive it seems to be for what its showing, turns me off a bit. I still play the single player, but it has not turned out the way I had expected it to be. Anyhow good luck man. BTW a buddy of mine, in London, loved gaming so much that he stopped smoking and drinking and used his new found wealth for games and hardware. just an example of if there is a will there is a way (other than steeling). http://www.alliedassault.com/ubb/smile.gif good luck. |

I got it running on my old comp. Pretty slow (low 20's, fps...) in 640, in 512 however it's very well playable. Maybe you haven't tried that...
The Quake III engine was never intended to be used with large, open outdoor environments ... |

Thanks to video games im drug-free and have a nice family. I love mohaa, i played the hunt with 20 odd people at a mates and loved it, looking down a sniper at the germans moving a head is great, picking one off now and then or the close quarters with SMGS and grenades flying over head. then u get to the graveyard and the sniping battle kicks off with the allies numerically stronger but a german sniper in the church has picked off two comrades one on each flank. You bolt it into a ditch and rifle a german in the next ditch, you see the 88 and you run to it, yopu are placing the bomb when you here a crack of a rifle and you fall to the ground, only to then rise as a spectator to see the rest of your team track him down and fill him with lead. I love it so much but as alot of you out there i have a 56k. Now my computer isnt that slow or bad.
pentium 3, 450 mhz 128mg ram no voodo card or updated video card. my computer is allright on most games like Counter Strike playing with over 20 people is fine, sudden strike and others. Its just mohaa, i dont know if its because of my 56k ( i know people whos 56k works fine for the game), lack of great graphics card but i have all video options on lowest for game or that i need servers that are in england where i am or that its a bad demo and that the final game will be allright. Im begging you please help me!!!!!!! |
i do not like mohaa mp so mush because its to like Quake or cs. just rush rush rush ..... maybe with some friends but not on a public server..

Actually your PC is rather slow, a 450mhz is going to be really stressed for this game Ive got a 1.2ghz and I can still see it chug.

shit, the only way it is possible for me to get a good game of the game that i love is to spend £40 a month on BT cable.Great i dont know about you lot but i cant afford that and that pisses me off, i wish i could go back to how it used to be with everyone having the same speed computer and all the games are fine for everyone. My PC is about 2 years old, so if i spend £700 on a new computer then in 2 maybe 1 years it will be out of date..... that sucks.Cable is too expensive and because of more people getting it it forces 56kers to get it because they have such a great connection which slows us down because we cant keep up! EA can go and kiss my ass cos they have made a game that only people with loads of money can play and that is gay!SO the only way i can play is probally 30 mins over my mates 3times a week whilst some of you pkasy it all day every day, get rewally good at it because you play it alll the time so if i come to play it i am crap aan gets called crap by people because you kill me in seconds..... great fun. im sorry if im moaning on but its so frustrating trying to play a game when it takes minuters to fire after you pressed the button, i look up and down the servers with objective matches 20 player max but i have to pass them and have to choose 2 player max free for all game.... thats really fun. sorry to all but you just witness a man crack!!!! 'sobs and puts gun to head'

easy upgrades and cheap...
Double your ram, another 128mb ram will cost about $19-$29us. Also you can get a generic geforce2 32mb video card for $50-$70 56k is fine if you know how to tweak it and join local games, and in the UK most games are local. http://personal.mia.bellsouth.net/mi...aboey/capn.jpg [This message has been edited by Capt_CruncH (edited January 08, 2002).] |
i didnt think of that, 2o doolars is like 15 odd pounds i can afford that easily, is it garunteed to work though?

ya, no offense man, thats what computer gaming is all about. pushing the envelope of graphics and such. if companies kept making games to work on old computers all the time, then progress would never go forward. we'd still be playing with doom 1 graphics.
hate to say it, but upgrade or go buy a console. I had a 400 mhz comp 4 years ago and it wasnt even the high end then. now, im not on the cutting edge or anything, but I upgrade when I can and try to be strategic with it. im just using a p3 900, 384m, gf3. I use b-day and xmas money to pay for little upgrades and buy used parts off the net. that helps keep costs down and keep me in happy gaming. good luck ------------------ if you can see us............then you're already dead Ghost Soldiers, 6th Ranger Bn. |
I understand malarkey, totally. Ive been upgrading on a shoestring budget ever since I got into computers. the one time I sprang was for a new dell 4 years ago.
and im still paying that baby off http://www.alliedassault.com/ubb/smile.gif but, seriously, im 31 and just graduated from college in 2000, so I havent had a lot to play around with either. you just have to look at where you get money and how you can take the scraps you get ahold of from time to time, and how you can upgrade bit by bit. for instance, I got about 75 bucks for my bday, with parents and grandmothers giving me a little cash. I saved that and sold a couple of things, my video cared being replaced and ended up with 250. then took that, found some good deals online and got a gf3 and sb audigy for like 330. got a good sound and video upgrade for 80 bucks of my own money. my burner doesnt work anymore, I cant upgrade the bios on my mb, my cd is about to pop, and im stuck on 900 mhz oc'd on my p3. so I dont have any fancy system, but it works. I just hope my cd lasts long enough to get MOH installed http://www.alliedassault.com/ubb/smile.gif 40 pounds is about 50 or so american. I pay that for dsl. its not as fast as my cable was, but its more consitent. I'd say go for the upgrade, online games will be a prob on 56k, but at least you can still play sp smoothly as opposed to neither smoothly (graphics wise). you could prob go up to a 700 p3, those you could get for under a 100 american, another 128 m, ~15 american, gf3 ti200, ~150 american. anyone of those would be good, especially since you dont have a 3d card. I cant believe you can even play this. well, anyway, hope this helps, good luck ------------------ if you can see us............then you're already dead Ghost Soldiers, 6th Ranger Bn. |
I know what you mean about advancing in technology but some people are better off than others, people who dont have to think about buying expsensive things they just do it, in america cable is everywhere and probally quite cheap but in southern england its really expensive. I know about upgrading and things like that but if i cant put tha much money into it, i only have 1 bday and xmas a year, i have £700 + in my building society which im not touching untill i really need it, i cant justify spending hundreads of pounds on things which will nedd replacing often that is what i hate things are advancing so much that i cant keep up, yeah if you parents have cable and they pay for it and your allowed to use i then its ok but mine dont so ill have to pay £40 pounds a month plus the installation fee of 150 odd thats nearly £200 pounds ibn one month then i have to upgrade my comp or get a new one i just cant do all this. I love playing games but i am not going to spend so much on playing mainly one computer game, i shouldnt have to everyone should be able to play a when they want with a resonable computer. If i bougght a new comp now for £700 +_ then in a years time people will be buying computers with twice the amount of speed and specs so games take up even more and then i get drawn into a cycle.I remeber it when i would pay £30 for a game and that was all the expense needed, computers where good because all this fast crap wasnt taking over so internet play was fine and the games wearnt crap, ive seen plenty of games this year which ive played and have run perfectly on my comp.... anyway ill stop rabbling on but you have to see my side of it i know its hard when you have something someone else hasnt to put yourselfin their shoes but you must see how frustrating it is for me.

well I can just say this....IF you want to Upgrade...go to www.pricewatch.com ...if you DON'T want to upgrade just get an internet accelerator...it will give you a small boost in your connection....OR get Cable service,or DSL..or SatCom....there are MANY options.....personally I would get a cable modem,ANd upgrade...that site I linked you too has the BEST prices on PC hardware in the WORLD!!!!....so it is your best bet,man...hope you get you prob. solved man...
