WW2 Book
Hey, i am considering writing a book based on my grandfathers experience in fighting the war with the red army, it would be diary style, and it would include the battle of stalingrad, battle of berlin, battle of warsaw, etc... It would be based on the true story, and all battles in the book my gradnpa would have really fought in. I would really appreciate any sugestions, and please vote in the poll.

By all means go ahead, we need more firsthand accounts, ones from the Russian Front are hard to come by as it is.
I volunteer to preview/edit you book biggrin: PS. Proteus, just because you don't read books doesn't mean he's gay |
Of course I would read it, who wouldnt? eek:

Just make sure you get all the info off him before he passes away.......Unfortunately, WW2 vets are a fading breed.
|

|
I dont know of any I barly know any WWII verterns now, most of the ones I know have passed away.
|
Woody Hershel Williams, the only medal of honor resipiant(sp) from West Virginia, came in and lectured our class today. He fought at Iwo Jima to help clear pillboxes on an airfield with a flame thrower.
|
my grandpa is a WWII vet of the Ukrainian Army. He toured all of Europe, i think he was in anzio. My other grandpa was in the Italian Navy oOo: but he didnt see any action, he just stayed on the ship at the base lol

Well, My gradfather, my great Unlce, and my grandmas cousin, all fought in WW2. All died except my gradpa. My great great gradfather was a russian cavalry in WW1, and then went on to fight in the revolution, i think he was with the Bolsheikivs, but im not positive. My great Uncle, died fighting in the city in which he was born( i think), Novograd. He also fought in the defense of Leningrad, and near that area.

My condolences. In regards to the book, that sounds like a great idea. I'd love to read something from the perspective of someone in the Red Army. |

My families got a pretty good military history record too, but not much recently. No relatives in Desert storm 1 or 2 and no one in the service today. My dad didnt serve in Vietnam because of his eyesight, his uncle was in Korea, my grandfather was in WW2 and his relatives died in Belgium, the Atlantic, Guadalcanal and in Burma, his father was in WW1 and his brother was in Russia with the American expedition to fight the Red Army. his uncle was in the Phillipines in the Spanish American war. My Grandma has a photograph book of her relatives who were in the civil war, i dont recall their names though. One of them was in the navy and I have his sword mounted on my wall. She has a more detailed account on who was who and where and she can trace her family back to Munich, 14th century. My moms family doesnt have a detailed account, but her dad told me of 2 relatives that were in Santa Annas army at the Alamo and another one at Buena Vista. No one in my family was at the battle of Puebla, which is celebrated by Cinco de Mayo today, but we have family friends who had relatives there.

but there are still a few vets from WWI around.
<100 though. |
There are even a few from the Spanish-American war still kicking, if I remember correctly.
|
my grandfather fought in warsaw for Poland
|
wow, i would love to have a naval sword that was once my ancestors hanging in my house. Unfortunately tho, nobody from my family went to the navy. I have only one relative who is in the army now, hes actually still in russia, and hes a Colonel.
P.S. Got started on the book after getting background info etc. Wrote about 2 pages. Now im rereading them and editing, tommorrow i hope to do as many as 5 more pages. |
