Good times, i can't wait for UVA vs VT coming soon.
|
PITT vs WVU on thanksgiving ... should be a blowout for WVU. cry:
|
I doubt it's the best rivalry in sports...since no one should give a shit about Michigan because Blue sucks.
You'd know that you'd believe that a sport that doens't welcome any teams besides American college teams would be your choice for best rivalry. Id say Yankees-Red Sox is the longest and has the most hatred. |

I always suspected it but now you have confirmed it, your an idiot. Why would the NCAA want other teams? I suppose you want CFL teams in there? It would still be a blowout! I can count on you to try to ruin every thread that is posted. If your not bad mouthing the US veterans you are shitting on President Bush, get a life |

I don't care for either team, but I watch Michigan vs. OSU every year. BTW, MD vs. Duke in hoops. rock: Recently, anyway. |

I don't see how ONE game a year can make you be considered for best rivalry. Im not saying NCAA should have canadian teams, im saying the best rivalry can't possibly be in a league like that. Argos-Ticats has just as much hate btw. Same with the Eskimos-Stamps. |

The U-M football team won the first Rose Bowl game in 1902, and has won an NCAA-record 842 games through the 2004 season. The football team is the NCAA's all-time winningest program—in both total wins and winning percentage. The program is a model of consistency, because it is one of only two teams to have been ranked in the final "Top 25" poll every year since 1989.[14] Since that time, the Wolverines have won outright or shared seven Big Ten titles and won a national championship. U-M football has won eleven national championships overall, the most recent in 1997,[15] and has produced three Heisman trophy winners.[16]Michigan is the first, and to date the only, school to produce a primarily defensive player who won the Heisman trophy,(Charles Woodson). Michigan Stadium ("The Big House"), is the largest football-only stadium in the world, with a capacity of 107,501 and attendance typically exceeding 110,000. The NCAA's record-breaking attendance has become commonplace at Michigan Stadium, especially since the arrival of Bo Schembechler in 1969. U-M has fierce rivalries with many teams, including Michigan State and Notre Dame. However, its football rivalry with Ohio State University is widely considered to be the fiercest in all of college athletics, and has been referred to as the greatest rivalry of all time by ESPN.[17] source http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/University_of_Michigan |
I'm pretty sure US vs Iraq is a bigger rivalry.

I've always wondered about that. How can a rivalry be between two schools that aren't even in the same state be as intense as Alabama-Auburn? Heck, we gotta live with those people every day of the year! Coaches that came to Alabama from outside of the program, like Bill Curry and Dennis Francioni, all say that they have never experienced anything like it in their career. (and as far as "best" is concerned, come talk to me after you've won 12 National Championships!) ;) biggrin: |
What makes the UM - OSU rivalry so great is that, with few exceptions, the game has Big10 and bowl game implications every year. Either Ohio State or UMich are at or near the top of the Big10 every year and this game usually seals the fate of one or the other, which in turn has an effect on the Rose Bowl and other BCS games.
So yes, it's one of the greatest rivalries in sports. If two teams hate each other, but their games are completely inconsequential every year, the quality of the rivalry suffers because not very much attention is given to the game. |

The big house is an amazing place to see a game, 110 thousand ppl...quite a site. Although i am a die hard Illini fan, we havent been competitive in football for quite some time. I definately hate ohio state the most though. OH HOW I HATE, OHIO STATE! |

There are other rivalries which are noteworthy, like Florida-Florida State, Alabama-Auburn, USC-UCLA, Army-Navy, and others, but none combine the history (almost 100 meetings) and the annual significance (at least 1 team in the final top 10 every year since 1987, plus only 5 times since 1967 has the the OSU/Michigan game had no impact on the championship of the Big Ten. One team or both either finished first or were first or tied going into the game every year but 1999, 1994, 1987, 1985, and 1983. Plus, over those years, only once has either team had a losing record, OSU in 1988.) No other rivalry can claim this. One thing fans of other rivalries always cite as a reason this one isn't the best is that it is rather uneven. Michigan does lead the series 55-35-6, but the Wolverines lead 13-0-2 before the 1919 game, and 19-3-2 before the 1928 game. Ohio State's only wins came during the 1919-1921 games. Taking out those first 24 games, the series is Michigan 36, Ohio State 32, 4 ties. It has remained pretty even throughout the time since 1928, when OSU finally started fielding nationally recognized teams. Michigan has won 795 games in its history (1st overall in NCAA history), and Ohio State has won 717 (7th overall). Ohio State has had 6 Heisman trophy winners, Michigan 3. Between them, the Bucks and Wolves went to 13 consecutive Rose Bowls between 1968-1980 (1969-1981 Rose Bowls). Since 1967, only once (1987) has neither Ohio State nor Michigan finished either first of second in the Big Ten. How's THIS for amazing? Since World War II (1945), Ohio State has won 421 games (421-144-20). Michigan has won 423! (423-154-15). Can't get much closer than that! Ohio State is 6th overall during that span, while Michigan is tied for 7th with Tennessee and Notre Dame. Since 1960, OSU has a (326-99-10) record-- 4th overall. UM's record is (324-109-10)-- 5th overall. Since 1989, OSU and Michigan have 93 wins apiece. Both are 7th over that span. Pick any period of time between 1900 and 1998 and Ohio State and Michigan are both in the top 10 overall of wins. Amazing. Compare the 20th century win total of OSU and Michigan (671+ 695= 1366) to those of Florida and Florida State (545+ 369= 914) or Alabama and Auburn (713+ 579= 1292) or Army and Navy (579+ 506= 1085), and tell me what the greatest rivalry of the 20th century is. |
