Some maps lag more than others because the map doesn't have "bottlenecks" set up in it. A bottleneck limits a player's view of the map and so lessens the video processing load.

Yeah, the demo cannot be modded via an internal CRC check, it looks like. However, server side mods (like realism) should work on the retail version.
