Vancouver's safe-injection site a concern: UN
Last Updated Tue, 02 Mar 2004 22:05:21
VIENNA - In a new report, the United Nations has criticized a Canadian safe-injection site for drug users.

The International Narcotics Control Board is an independent UN organization that monitors international drug use.

It zeroed in on Vancouver's provincially-run site, which is the only one of its kind in North America.

The report concludes the existence of the site means that Canada is violating international drug treaties it signed. The board says it will review the site after three years.

The organization also criticizes Ottawa's planned legislation to decriminalize possession of small amounts of marijuana.

"The board is concerned that the revisions could contribute to the mistaken perception that cannabis is a harmless substance," says the report.

The safe-injection site, which opened last year, is intended to give addicts a safe place and clean equipment to shoot up.

Critics say it encourages drug use and does nothing to help addicts to quit their habit.

WTF??? Bullshit. I dont care about safe marijuana use, but heroin and needles are dangerous. IMO, these resources would be better spent on helping junkies go clean.

Millions of dollars has been spent to get people off drugs, but they just go right back to them. Why try to control those people that are already addicted and have a little chance of rehabilitating? Spend the money trying to keep the drugs out, and then there will be less drugs and therefore less need for stations like this. Instead of attacking the problem when it arises, attack it before it happens. This is going on already with little success, and that is why pot may be decriminalized. I'm thinking in favour of this action. I've never smoked and probably never will, but spending millions to get rid of something that is pretty much "harmless" is stupid. Attack the source. Grow operations and such.

I think providing places such as these stations might in the long run help the users out. And the fact that needles are dangerous is exactly the lace is opened. Vancouver is one of the worst places in N America for drug users. Probably one of the worst places in the world. This place allows the safe destruction of used needles and such and makes it safer out on the streets. I think theres EMS there so nobody overdoses and shit like that. I think this helps out more than rehabing does.

Ive always liked Canada and always thought good of them, but if they legalize "small amounts" of marajuana, then I will lose a lot of respect for that country...

Explain please.

The US spends billions of dollars on trying tokeep kids off pot. Its obviously not working. Why not spend that money elsevwhere, and attack those supplying the stuff. If you make it a fine insted of a criminal offense your saving a lot of time and money. If you eliminate all the pot coming in, then there won't be any to smoke. There you go. Pretty simple. Chasing people around for pot offenses is stupid. Its like tracking people down who didn't signal in a lane change on Monday Jan 12, 2001.
