Techno, Trance, Hard-Trance, House, Hard-House, Hardcore, Happy-hardcore, Dance, Garage, Speed-garage, Drum and bass, Jungle, Ambient to name but a few are all genres of an era that has progressed from early 80s to the present day.

You will rarely know which is truly which unless you spend some time listening to underground origins of the music. Picking up a CD from a shop with "Dance" or "Techno" written on doesn't guarantee you have the real stuff.

Most compilation CDs are mainstream and won't be genre specific, no matter what it says on the case. Note, I said most.

I've never enjoyed Techno. I would never say it takes no talent to create, however, because I could not be a critic of work I don't enjoy.

I enjoy Hard House, Trance and some Drum-and-Bass. When I'm spannered off my head in a club I tend to enjoy Hard House the most. When I'm relaxing at home or map-making I like to kick back to Digitally Imported online Trance radio.

Any other time I will listen to Supergrass, some Oasis (older stuff and the tracks with Noel on vocals), Blur, Green Day, Nirvana, Sting, REM, The Verve, Dido, Seal, Eva Cassidy, Prodigy, Queen and many more acts.

As you might see I am a fan of music, not one particular genre. To say any single style of music takes no skill to create and perform shows a lack of appreciation.

If I like the sound of a track, I will listen to it. Simple as that.

Tripper, I never said there was no skill involved did I ? I said no talent and structure. Maybe saying no talent was a bit over the top, but when I listen to music, I like structure, I like a clearly defined theme and lyrics to match.

We are on both different sides of the musical field though, so we could never agree on anything musically as far as taste goes. I retract my statement about no talent, in my younger years I was in that crowd, hip hop, rap, techno....whatever, I knew DJ's, I skated with them, and they did have talent.

But when I go see bands that I like playing, which is rare these days, those guys have more energy and conviction than any DJ can muster up and definately have more musical talent.

But anyway, respect to them, they gotta do what they gotta do to get by in life.

Its pretty much all club music to me, good to dance to. I had a roommate that could tell you the dif betwen all of them. When we would have parties, he would ask which type we wanted to hear. I would just tell him to put on some shit with a beat. All these different gernes, for basically the same type of music, hell, you would think the government was naming them. If you have to be an expert to name that type of music, its just plain overkill, but I guess it makes the '1337' feel good to be able to call everyone else n00bs.

I was really trying to put that point forward, actually, but I didn't state it in a sentance.

They are all separate styles and genres, just like Rock music is split up into its own various styles.

You can call Metallica, Nirvana, Green Day and Oasis all rock bands but do they all play the same type of music?

Of course they don't.

Same thing, different scenes.

What I was trying to say is that despite all this segregation in music, for those who truly just like music it doesn't matter.

Those who feel they wish to pigeon-hole themselves into one category only limit themselves, in my opinion.

But, I don't see what's so wrong with being pationate about Techno to such a degree that you feel the need to say that any generic Dance track is not Techno.

I am certain if you told a Green Day fan that they listened to a rock band they would be quick to point out that they are, in fact, a punk band.

do we need labels for everything? ive been listening to a wide variety of sub techno genres since i was like six. "techno" was my first real introduction into music, and will always remain in my life. gabber, trance, hard-trance, acid jazz, ambient, and so many more are all part of my daily dose of music. call it what u will, i will always love it. the funny thing is, theres always something new out there.so many djs and artist out there with all a different style.
