I'm in a similar situation, kinda....
You have to sever all ties tho to truly move on. Like deleting friendships on websites (myspace, etc), old presents and phone numbers if you can. Of course thats easier said than done mate and since you've been friends from the beginning, only you know how to deal with that..

My problem is that my younger girlfriend has totally and utterly fallen for me and I'm finding it extremely difficult to tell her how I feel as I know I will break her heart. I don't feel as strongly for her as she does for me and its just not fair on the whole relationship.
I basically plan on seeing her for the next 2-3 months but I'm unsure how I can cope until then. She is going away to Vancouver, Canada for 4-5 weeks in June and so I really have to sort my head out. My sister wants to meet her, etc so its just one big mess in my head right now....
I'll also be moving to a new flat this Sept for uni so that complicates things even more.......

She sees me as her perfect guy, but I don't see her as my perfect girl. I have to tread so carefully with everything I say and thats not how r'ships should be.
