Well, mankind was never in danger, hence the jet liner flying in the sky when that guy falls on his ass and stares up at the sky. Since the UK is an island, it would be difficult to get the virus overseas, unless a cargo ship had an infected on it, but by the time the shit hit the fan, the ship would probably not make it. It is to be inferred that the UK was the only region affected. The announcement by the soldiers that New York had been hit was only an attempt to get others to believe that the situation was serious enough to wipe out mankind.
