Default Answer me this... - 11-06-2002, 07:46 PM

Just looking at toms hardware guide and saw the tests they did on all the different cards.

My brother is buying a computer and the GF4's here are out of his price range. I have a GF2 and told him not to go with that. So hes decided to go with a GF3 for the moment. The GeForce3 Ti200 128MB to be exact.

On the page here: http://www17.tomshardware.com/graphic/0 ... index.html

it says
GeForce3 Ti200 128MB NVIDIA Reference v28.32 175/400 128Bit DDR

Just curious as to what the 175/400 means under the Clock column. Can someone explain the different numbers to me? I know the bigger the better but I think it would be best if I understoof the numbers. Thanks.

I told him the new cards were coming out Christmas and that prices were likely to go down so he wasnts to wait till then. But anyway, I would still like to know the answer.

The clock speeds are simply..the clock speeds of the card. Certain cards are capable of having higher speeds because of the type of GPU and it's cooling capabilites. The first one I think is the Clock core, or the Memory core clock, not too sure. But that pretty much decides how fast the card is.

175/400 = GPU/RAM Clock speed. The faster, obviously, the better. Please do not get a GF3 Ti200. Either get the regular GF3 or the Ti500. Alot of people don't know this but the Ti200 is WORSE than the regular GF3.

Why even get a Geforce3 when you can get a GeForce4 cheap? Doesn't make much sense to me, but then not alot does.

The thing is here GF4 is not cheap. Where he was gonna buy from it was $400 and $500 for the 4600.

Ti200 is $200.

So don't really have much choice. Anyway hes going to wait a while and hopefully by then the prices will be a little lower.

The Ti4200 is a perfectly acceptable card that should be about the same as 200 canadian. It clocks at 250/444, for those that are curious. However, it's worth noting that theres more to an improved video card then just a faster gpu and ram...

For instance, a GF4 card will outperform a GF3 card if they are at the same speed...

400 to 500? What the fuck?! I just bought a 128DDR Ti 4600 LeadTEK for 210 dollars. And I thought THAT was too pricey. If someone is spending 400-500 on a card, they need to be getting a Radeon 9700 128DDR. Hell the DDR doesn't even cost more than 400 dollars.

the 4200 IS an acceptable card for budget and should not be overlooked. 128DDR is good, although 64DDR is fine as well from my experience. I returned my 64DDR 4200 for a 128DDR 4600, simply because the 4600 was on sale and only 10 dollars more. I really haven't noticed much of a diff except the 4600 knocks out the JAGGIES better.
