Default how the hell do i stop pop ups!!! - 11-30-2002, 07:06 PM

cry: ok, i know how to stop the regular old pop ups that appear when u browse the internet. Its the ones that pop up while im off the internet, and more importantly while im in a moh match! I have no programs running like kazaa etc during this time and the shit still pops up and takes me out of game. I have asked around and some suggested ad-aware. I got it and scanned and delete, but they keep coming back when i havent even been to any sites or anything. I have tried everything i can think of. They are the same pop ups everytime so its got to be something on my HD right? PLZ help me. aim=gator2109 msn=gator2109@hotmail.com

i don't know if this is what you're looking for but i got this off winxpnews.

New Form of Spam Hits Windows XP Computers

Just when you thought it couldn't get any worse, those scumbag spammers have now hit a new low. As if pop-up ads and email spam wasn't enough, now they're taking advantage of the built-in Windows Messenger service. The Messenger service isn't the same as the Windows Messenger. It allows you to broadcast messages to all the computers on your network. For example, if you open a command prompt and type:

net send * Hello World

All the computers on your network within "broadcast" range, will see a dialog box pop up that says "Hello World". Now the dreaded spammers are actually sending these message service messages over the Internet! To say that this is the lowest of the low doesn't do justice to the heinous nature of this kind of spamming. If you see what appears to be a regular Windows dialog box with "Messenger Service" in the title bar and then some spam in the body of the dialog box, you've been "Messenger Service Spammed". If you're running an Internet firewall, you shouldn't be seeing these messages since the firewall should be shutting down the ports the service uses. Another way to stop the messages is to shut down the service. Here's how:

Click Start and then click the Control Panel.
In the Control Panel, click the link on the left side that allows you to switch to Classic View.
Open the Administrative Tools applet.
In the Administrative Tools window, open the Services console.
In the Services console, scroll to the Messenger service entry. Right click on it and click Properties.
In the Messenger Properties dialog box, click the Stop button. After the service stops, click the down arrow in the Startup type drop down list box and select Disabled. Click Apply and then click OK.

Now you're protected from these spammers' form of unusual punishment.

Go to [url:c1c6b]http://www.download.com[/url:c1c6b] and pick up the SpyWare remover. It'll search for all the SpyWare you have on you computer, then you delete it.

no, desert eagle, i have tried that as well. Its pop up advertisements that pop up periodically and take me out of game. Its like a never ending stream of like 10 different ads that keep coming every now and then.

Clear out your cookies on a regular basis. Most of these ads that come up when you're away are just cookies sitting in your temp memory whith a script that gives them a "time delay", if you will. I keep my cookies and temp files clear and i don't have any problems. Hope that helps. also, that ad-aware progrma someone already mentioned is very good. I use it all the time.biggrin:

Nothing more annoying then play a game online and BAM, game minimizes and your back to the desktop reading how you can get a free diploma or get a psychic reading....Check out this site:

http://www.stopmessengerspam.com/

It explains how those pop-up's are getting threw your operating system....your probably running Windows XP.

If you're using Internet Explorer for the love of god don't install any of that Cydoor/Comet Cursor shit you see in pop-ups on some websites. Best advice is to change from IE to Opera or Mozilla, both have pop-up ad blocking as a standard feature.
