A good magazine to begin familiarizing yourself with hardware and it's funtionality, interaction etc. . .is Maximum PC.

Also Computer Power User

http://www.computerpoweruser.com/

Also, the site I recommended before, Extremetech

http://www.extremetech.com/

This is where I'm getting all of my information.

Asus. the highest quality without the raping soyo likes to administer. A7V8X is what i got, but there are better out now. Get one that supports DDR2. Stay away from epox. Everytime I look at bench marks they always complain that the epox wouldnt work.

Newegg sucks. Old, goto http://www.pricewatch.com

for a case, get at least a 300W power supply, 350 if your going P4. It should have at least 2 5.25 bays, and 2 3.25 bays. My best suggestion are these two:

Price: Antec SX630II - http://www.pricewatch.com/2/74/960-5.htm (4th from bottom)

Best: Antec Plus660AMG - http://www.pricewatch.com/2/74/960-10.htm (4th from bottom)

Joe - used to think the same as you about newegg and pricewatch. Until I built my pc. Newegg is solid and usually only a couple of dollars more than the lowest pricewatch price. They also deliver ANYWHERE in the US within 3 days (california to florida). Not the possible 3 weeks I got last time with the lowest cost pricewatch vendor (with good third party ratings no less). I will pay the insignificant premium for newegg every time now, but that is just me. I think I paid an extra $20 for $500 worth of components (processor, ram, mobo, hdd, plus a couple peices for a friend) and got them all quick and from one vendor. I would hate to have to track orders from 4 different vendors to save a couple bucks a piece.
