Using a packet sniffer it shows there is a packet sent to your comp, from the server you're trying to join with a "getKey" command in it, then another packet is sent back with the Invalid Key text. It doesn't look like it gets sent to a EA server of anykind, just to the game server. Don't see how a true authentication setup wouldn't run something by a EA master server. Of course the game server could then bounce something over EAs way I guess. With all the problems with legit owners, it wouldn't suprise me if a "hacked server patch" comes out soon enough to skip the check, and if the legit problems keep up most every server will be running it...
