A mouse pad specifically made for optical mice. It has no fiber surface, so that way bumps and ridges don't throw off the orentation. Get it @ stores like CompUSA, Staples, etc.
I've seen this problem a ton with optical mice. Maybe once or twice with ball mice. Although when it was ball mice it usually took something drastic to fix it.. compared to just changing your pad using an optical =p
I've heard of those optical pads from like future shop and the like, although, I haven't gotten once yet since apparently it doesn't work well with the Logitech MX700. Causes the above problems ;\
It happend to me also. check the connect in the back of the computer. Mine wasn't making a firm conection. I plugged in a new mouse and the problem went away.
