Spoken like an English major. Maybe pshycology. :P
There is a lot of truth to the "who you know" arguement but it is not the only way things happen. Good work usually doesnt go un-noticed, but you still need to always look out of #1.
Anyone that goes to college, gets a
specialized, professional degree (engineering, accounting, computer science, law, etc.), works hard, and looks for advancement opportunities (and doesnt just wait for things to happen) will do just fine. Networking can help immensely, too. Dont expect a bunch of doors to swing open for a marketing degree. Advanced degrees open up new opportunities as well, you just need to be prepared to take advantage of those opportunies as they present themselves. If you do all that, then all you can hope for is to be promoted to your level of incompitence and ride it out to retirement.
