Is there a way (without cheating) to get on the roof of the church? Or any higher than the first floor for that matter?

Yes. It is possible to get up alone, but it doesn't work reliably. You basically have to keep jumping until something 'happens' and you get up on the wall at the side.

With a team-mate it's easy.
