I've done some research on Internet adversiting techniques through my work as a web usability specialist and what I've found is this: Banner advertising on web sites does not work.

I'm not sure how it works for the owner of this site, but I assume he gets paid micropayments every time an ad is served to a visitor. I could be wrong, but I think that's how it works. The real question is how do the advertisers make any money. You're right in saying that people are losing money with these things because they're seen as an annoyance.

Web users have a goal in mind. Whether that goal is to see naked pics of Jennifer Love Hewitt or to find the latest mod for MOHAA; they have a PURPOSE for being online. Pop-up ads are an obstacle to achieving said goals, hence they are viewed negatively.

Even regular banner ads on sites (i.e that don't pop-up) are highly ineffective. Most users participating in a study in a controlled lab environment didn't even notice them, let alone click on them.

So, yeah...I have no idea why companies still shove these pop-ups down our throats. The only companies making any money on ads are the ones who make pop-up killers.

Pop-ups are almost exactly like annoying telemarketers. How many times do people actually buy something off someone who calls, interupts their dinner or alone time and trys to sell a person something? Almost never. I think that some companys should get the hint that if people wanted to buy a product or a service, that they would go look for it themself without pushy annoying people trying to sell it to you. They are just wasting money on products for their business (i.e phones and computers etc. and wasting money on work wages)

they have new types of pop ups without any x button, and you have to wait for the whole animation to end until it pops up.

i can understand the user trying to get a little $ to help pay for his site with a pop up or 2. but i remember the old days of warez when some sites had so many pop ups it would lock up a computer & they would keep coming untill you closed the site you were trying to get at. what does the person gain from that? a bit of profit from all the ads but no one is gonna go to the page if it fucks them up every time. just compleatly retarted if ya ask me.
