Default 9th Gurkha Rifles skins...pics - 10-20-2003, 07:08 AM

I put together this skin pack of the British Army 9th Gurkha Rifles for Spearhead. They are based on work originally by Krystov (Desert rat and Aussie jungle), thanks to him for letting me use them. Apart from their dogged tenacity and courage, the Gurkhas were much feared in no small part down to their skill in wielding the dreaded 'kukri' blades which they carried. Their battle honours during WW2 include France and Italy (Monte Cassino), North Africa, Burma and South East Asia, so I've done relevant versions for all 3 theatres of war. I've had to make some guesses in placing the unit shoulder insignia, as I didn't have many pictures to work from. The only problem I have is that i'm not knowledgable enough in 3-d modelling to make a kukri for their equipment belts. I was hoping I could find a volunteer who might be keen to give it a go for me. The kukri in the pic claims to be military issue, 17 inch overall length, 12 inch blade. If anybody out there thinks they can do it and they have the time, please PM me as I dont really want to release them before they are complete. You'll get due credit of course. I'm also interested in some feedback. Would you like to see an officer and NCO version of each ? Comments and critiscisms welcome.

Dude, good job, but they somehow resemble the japs.
No offence, great job.

D'oh...well spotted. The face texture did start life as a Japanese soldier, big thanks to the original author, not sure who you are. I did work heavily on it based on what photographs of Gurkhas I could find online. It was tricky, as there are quite a few differences from a Japanese face. The other thing about the Gurkhas is that, coming from Nepal, there are a lot of ethnic influences among their peoples..what with India and China being on either side of their borders, so they do vary a bit themselves. What I've done is, I made the cheek bones look a bit broadar and higher, and darkened the skin tone, and subtly altered the head to a shorter broader shape by changing the head skel model. If you were to see this modern photo of a Gurkha Regiment Para I have, with a very Chinese influenced face and reddish skin, you'd agree that its a fair likeness, honest. biggrin: I may release these as seperate packs, Europe, Jungle and Desert versions, but that depends on popular opinion. I really dont like to release them before somebody can model a kukri knife for me...would be shameful otherwise, but If nobody volunteers within the next few weeks then I will let them go if people twist my arm hard enough. Anybody know any 3-d modellers out there and would like to put in a good word for me ? I wont feel they are properly finished until the kukri is done. And... if anybody knows to to make a kukri version of the 'machete knife mod' for Spearhead, get in touch. Wouldnt that finish them off nicely ? I'll worry about that once the skins are done however. Keep the opinions coming in for now.

Cheers.

They are made for Spearhead, so should work for Breakthrough, but arent yet tested on it. I'll be making sure they do however.

Gurkhas are awesome, they're supposedly the most honored and well trained troops in the world. Aren't they like British special forces basically? I saw a show on them once, they're friggin hardcore soldiers.

They arent classed as Special forces as such, but are considered one of the elite fighting units of the world. These days, as well as the Royal Regiment of Gurkhas, there is a Gurkha Parachute Regiment as well. There are stories about them tossing the decapitated heads of their enemies into the German trenches during World War 1. This had a demoralising effect on the German soldiers. There are similar stories from the Falklands War. It is said that an Argentine unit surrendered as soon as they got wind that the Gurkhas were coming. Cant really say I blame them. I'll be releasing the Gurkhas in 3 seperate packs, European (Italy), Jungle and Desert versions. Officer / Serg / Corporal or Private in each pack. First lot should be out in the next couple of days. I'll post a link here.

These will be submitted to AA.us over the next days but the first pack is available here for now, in the skins section;

Have fun with them.
