iDSL worth it?

Since I live about 38,000 ft away from the nearest CO pretty much everything is not available for my area except iDSL. Ive tried calling the cable company but they told me that they have not started on there cable internet and will so in about a year (same thing they said 3 years ago). Well Ive been emailed several iDSl offers all averaging to about $200 for installation $300 for parts and $90 a month. Ill post direct links if you guys want. Well iDSL cost more because it is harder to make available since im so far way from the CO. It is also slower (144k believe). My friend told me that he can install it for me and possibly buy the parts for it to make that cheaper. I would like to know if that is possible. I would also like to is this iDSl is at all worth all this trouble. For me it is border line because that is a lot of money ,but lets face it 56k cant do shit. Your opnions are welcome and thanks for taking a look.

I hate to sound like an ass but please post this in the Technical forum or off-topic forum next time.

Anyway I am on DSL and it IS worth it. I am NEVER going back to 56k!

You ARE sounding like an ass, and there is no technical specific forum. The individual has a "general question" regarding the performance of connection-packages - a question he'd no doubt like answered in light of his wanting to play the game in MP mode.

If we are going by your logic - your whining double posts concerning "snipers" should really have been placed in the MODS forum - shouldnt it?

FALCOLN my boy - look into Satellite. Might be a better, and cheaper way to go for you.

Who said you're too far frm the s/o? I'd re-check that. Get an official reply frm the tele' co'.

Also go to this site and check and see if you can find a company to serve you.

Your mentioned option sounds a bit expensive. However, if you want it go for it.

Also, there is satellite sevice but I'm not sure if it works with on-line gaming.

The guys at DSL Reports are experts at various options. Get in their tech boards.

BTW I woulden't get Satellite for online gameing. It is faster in theroy but often has extreamly high pings. At least thats what I know.

You tell me since no one else can. As fas as I know, since getting AOL DSL, and connecting through Windows XP, theres been nothing but troubles. And strangely - most has been XP in origin.

1.) Connectivity. The first few weeks I had this service, I was getting CONTINUALLY dropped of off my signal, because XP kept on reporting an unplugged network cable (I was using a USB modem). XP apperantly doesn't work well with USB devices, and was looking for a Network Card, when it should have been looking for the modem. I got a WESTELL, problem solved - or so it would seem.

2.) I got this game, MOH - tried to connect. Nasty ass ping. Im talking "a*ss-raping" pings in the 500-999 range. Unacceptable for someone supposedly running DSL. Called AOL; first guy told me I had a "High-Speed" connection, so I would be getting a "High-Ping". Fine. Do some research, find the opposite. Have techs come out to check the line. They remove a bridge-tap thats on the line. Doesn't do anything. One day, I switch over to my hard-drive with ME on it. For giggles I run MOH to pass the time. Smooth (well not incredibly, but better - other games run perfect however). Back on to XP - same deal, high ping in MOH - connectivity issues in RTCW. 2000 ping in HALF LIFE.

So, just led me to the conclusion that either my settings were all fuqqed in XP, or that XP just doesn't work well with broadband software.

i run XP with my sdsl with no problems at all. In counterstrike i have gamespy filter out every server that pings over 50 to me and i still have over 300 servers to choose from.

some problems i see.

NEVER use anything USB for conectivity.

NEVER user aol.

I use megapath and have great service through them. I ping 10-20 to alot of counterstrike servers. i ping 20 to my MoH server.

Its not XP you have other problems. I wouldnt use AOL if you paid me, so im not sure why youre using them heh.

The reason for the sporatic service in some areas is that the first generation DSLAM (Digital Subcriber Line Access Module) located in the central offices have to use the imbedded cable plant in the field. Some of this cable is good. (no bad splices, load coils, bridge taps or multigauge wiring) There would be nothing in the copper to impede the transmission of the signal. Other cable is not so good...Trouble is..Even though your getting DSL from the Telco's, your dealing with two entities. Their's the regulated side of the house which deals in dial tone and the unregulated with deals with DSL..By FCC law, the regulated side controls the local loop and won't jump to any hoops to correct a bad loop, unless you perform an executive appeal. The Second generation of pseudo DSLAM's will be located in outside Cabinets in the outlying areas..This is called the PRONTO project...This takes time and money to change throughout the country.

First off..NEVER EVER use AOL and any DSL/Cable internet connection together, never even have them on the same PC. AOL corrupts the TCP/IP stacks of other ISP's then it screws its own. $90 a month is a little high for DSL, unless that is the regular in your area, here in Texas it is about $40 a month. i pay 99 a month for 1.1meg/1.1meg sdsl

adsl is usually 40ish

I'm certain AOL is also a cause of the high ping - however, I cant just discount that everything works more kosher on ME than on XP. But truly, AOL goes through a 3rd party to get me the DSL, where as I could just go through PAC BELL or EARTHLINK which is appearantly more gamer friendly.

in my experience. there are only 2 isps worth going to with dsl

megapath and speakeasy

if you dont want to go through them go direct to your local bell. The service will suck, but itll give you better quality than a discount isp can. Earthlink is garbage, they are getting way to AOL like.
