 I believe, the best way to have a good FPS keyboard/mouse layout is as follows:
 <UL TYPE=SQUARE>
 <LI> Optimal distance between left and right hand, something comfortable, yet doesn't cause injury to the limbs or too awkward.
 <LI> Try to find a nice place on the keyboard to rest your left hand (if your right handed) or right hand (if your left handed) where you have access to many keys. Also, binding keys that are related to their commands also helps. (eg. R for reload, V for voice commands) Default is WSAD layout. Keep your arms parallel to the desk, (ie elbows at 90 degrees, forearms at horizontal level) so that you can use the keyboard for a prolonged period of time.
 <LI> Try to get a nice multi-buttoned mouse, a 5 button optical mouse will outperform a 2 button standard MS mouse. That way, you have 5 keys binded that you might need regularly, besides the usual fire, secondary fire buttons, you can also bind a further button to use, and one for reload or whatever. You could also use the mousewheel to switch weapons, and the mousewheel as a button for last used weapon.[/list]
 Ok, that's my opinion, so you better take it with a grain of salt. Or sugar if your inclined that way.

 i know it mat seem simple and a little wierd but use the arrows to move around along with the mouse(two button is ok" and "end" for reload, "num pad 0" for open doors and such, "numpad 1" to duck, "ctrl" to jump and "page down" to swith to nades, also "delete" to cycle through weapons, its just an idea

 The set up I use is:arrow up = forward
 arrow down = Back
 arrow left = strafe left
 arrow right = strafe right
 enter = use
 right shift = jump
 right ctrl = crouch
 0 key on num pad = reload
 For multiplay I than add two keys for leaning
 delete and page down the rest I keep as they are set by default course have thought about those pesky extra buttons on the mouse that never get used for anything....mmmm

 call me old fashined but one of the resons i like it that way is all the keys are close but not on top of each other. ive tried the defalt and just kept hiting the wrong keys wich is a real pain when you have to move fast. the only problem i have is i have to move my keyboard over so the keys are near my left hand.

 Dude, that is the same exact configuration that I used for like 4 years, like with Half-Life... That's cool. Everybody thought I was really weird, but it was a good configuration for me then.

 Now I find that the "WASD" key config is the best. It has everything within reach.

 Me too...I used the Arrow key setup for YEARS,then I got used to the WASD setup..you have 14 keys readily availible,with the Arrow setup,you only have 11.I find that the WASD setupis better because it is on the left-side of the keyboard.(that means you do not have to slide the Keyboard over to rest your hand on the arrow keys.)
as for the Mouse,get one with a WHEEL! the wheel has TWO functions.you can press the wheel like a button (labled as mouse button 3 on some mice)AND you can use it to scroll through weapons.I have the 3rd Mouse button as reload.

 i pretty much use the default,
 mouse 3 = reload

 mouse 4 and 5 for lean left and right, left

 alt for walk toggle (i seem to be the only one that has figured out walking is very useful in snowy park, as my team mates run around guns blazing)

 left ctrl for crouch

 left shift for walk

 I'm left-handed and playing FPS games in a PC is a rare activity that seems to be more natural to left-handed people than to right-handed. I explain. I use the mouse only for firing (mouse1 button), using (mouse2 button) and of course guiding myself (moving it). All my most important keyboard functions are in the keypad: 1 - turn left
 2 - crouch
 3 - turn right
 4 - strafe left
 5 - go backwards
 6 - strafe right
 7 - toggle walk/run (have to keep pressing it)
 8 - go ahead
 9 - not used in MOHAA
 NumLock - look down
 / - center view
 * - look up
 - (minus) - reload
 + - secondary function of the weapons
 Enter - jump
 0 - zoom out (if available, like in NOLF)
 , - zoom in (if available, like in NOLF)
 . - not used in MOHAA

 When there is a lean function, like in RtCW, I use 7 and 9 to lean.

 Normally, the right arrow is used to holster the weapon (easily accessed with my thumb).
 The keys labeled as not used has, indeed, a use, but it depends on the game I'm playing. In NOLF, for instance, I use 9 to change the function of the applets.

 So, why I think a left-handed is better suited? Because for us, the keyboard is exactly in the middle, the mouse to the left, and the keypad to the right. A right-handed person has the mouse to the right and so must use the leftmost part of the keyboard that must stay a little to the left. Furthermore, the leftmost part of the keyboard has its keys not aligned, as they are in the keypad.
