Guys I have the NVmax tool for my Geforce 2 GTS and am wondering if I should enable Vsync under the OpenGL option. I am not too familiar with real technical things on my vid cards and would appreciate someone enlightening me thanks...
------------------ "Fur Ehrund Pflicht, bis herz und klinge bricht"
I aim for 85 fps. My monitor refresh is set to 85 Hz.
If the game is cranking out more than 85 fps, then I could theoretically improve the quality of the graphics by enabling vsynch, thereby limiting the fps to 85 and eliminating seams between frames.
If it is putting out less than 85, I want to improve performance, so I disable vsynch.
Sometimes I get up to 100 fps, sometimes below 50. I care more about speeding up the 50 than about improving the quality of the 100. So I turn vsynch 'always off' in the Geforce driver.
If you are consistently getting 100 fps, then a better solution would be to set your monitor refresh to 100 Hz, if possible.
Conversely, if you are getting lower frame rates, you could try lowering your monitor refresh rate. I actually lowered monitor refresh from 100 Hz to 85 Hz to decrease the bandwidth demands on the video card and thus improve performance. The theoretical result should be that scenes over 85 Hz won't be as smooth. But then, that's not what you need in a game like this. You need to increase the frame rate of your slow areas.
BTW, I have tried vsynch 'always on' and saw no improvement in quality.
