We've been arguing the specifics of awareness and consciousness for
thousands of years so I won't be giving you a satisfactory answer any
time soon... but keep in mind that as science progresses, so does our
knowledge of everything become based on natural laws instead of the
mystical. I don't know about you, but unless I dream, sleep IS death
for a very temporary length of time: I sometimes keep myself awake
"just a little longer", irrationally fearing that I'll never wake up again...
... but the joke is on me: I'd never even have COGNIZANCE of it.
