I just started my pc & got a 30 second howl from my power supply fan, my question is: can I replace the fan itself inside the power supply or do I have to buy a new power supply?

How old is the power supply. If you just got a noise and then it ran my guess is its got some crap built up in it. id clean and lube it and see if that fixes the problem. Fans get very dirty by nature. I use one of those little bottles of oil that comes with a fishing reel. Its got the needle to get the oil into the inner part of the fan without getting it all over the place. Clean it and put a drop or two on the spline that goes into the motor.

I suspect that will fix your problem without have to spend any money.

My comps just over a year old now, and I've removed every fan and WD40'd them all due to excessive noise / 'howling'. (CPU Fan, Vid card Fan, Exhaust, Inlet etc....every one of them)

Take the fan out.
Remove the sticker on the back. Keep the sticker, as you want to put it back later.
Sometimes there's a small rubber round thing under the sticker, rip it out and put it somewhere safe, you'll want to put it back later too.
Squirt WD40 or even sewing machine oil in there. Not too much as to make it drip everywhere.
Spin it as fast as you can. It's fun.
Wipe up all the excess WD40 or oil.
Replace the round rubber thing.
Replace the sticker. If your sticker won't stick back, just use masking tape (the white paper stuff), instead of the sticker.

Throw the fan back in and congratulations you've saved some money and had some fun! freak:

fuck I wish id read your post 10min ago. I just put it back together. I cleaned the dust out ect. but i dint bother to take the sticker out. fuck il have to do it tomorow. thanks guys

1) Turn off and disconnect PSU.
(2) Open PSU Cover.
(3) Remove fan and clip the wire leading to PSU PCB as far away from the PCB as possible.
(4) Clip connector off of replacement fan and soter the wires from it to the leftover wire leads that lead to the PSU PCB.
(5) Install fan, close PSU cover, use PSU.
Red = Positive +
Black = Negative -

Theres no need for a that just to clean and lube a fan. He asked the question we just suggested ways to do it. I seriously doubt he needs 5 pages of text and pictures to put a little lite oil in a fan!!!

hehe I managed to oil it all up, actully more like just souced it in it. I think its too far gone though because its still too loud. At least now I know how to get the fan out ect, so I can replace it easly. it still gives off a loud screeching noise when first starting. tonight im going to do the CPU fan, I saw a sticker on it so im hopeing it can be done too but when i took the sticker off the case fan their was a plug but it was plastic & their is no way to get it out. I guess that way your garrenteed to go back & buy a new fan.

never use WD40, it will dry it out over time. It is designed to displace water then it dries up like a desert

My fans have been going strong for at least 3 months now, since WD40'ing them.
I'll probably use some oil next time then.
