HELP!!!

I recently installed Norton Antiviris 2002 and it caused my cd player in my computer to not be able to read any cd I put in it. Anyone have any suggestions to how I can fix this?

1st check with symantecs web site. www.symantec.com.

When you start your PC do you see your CD-rom drive listed along with your hard drive in the post boot screens?
What OS are you running? if it's win9X then go to system properties and check to see if the CDrom drive is listed, Win2k or XP right click on My computer, then to manager then to disk manager. See if you drive is located there.

I have never had a problem with any anti-virus program and a piece of hardware. If all else fails try uninstalling the virus program and then reboot the PC and see if the drive comes back. If not call tech support, that’s what they are there for, you paid for there software.

The CD ROM is listed when the PC boots up. With and without the anti virus program installed. I am running Windows XP Professional and just installed it about a month ago. I did check with Symantec website and they have nothing and I even sent in a problem to them and still haven't heard anything. I am at the point where I am going to dismantle the computer and unplug and replug the CD ROM. Unless anyone else has an idea. Thanks for the reply.

Try resetting your bios to default settings. Also if you didnt already, turn off your system for at least 10 seconds before you reboot. Sometimes reboot doesnt reset I/O devices. You could disconnet the IDE and Power cables...but reset your bios first. I think its F10.

So it wouldn't be a hardware issue if the bios sees it when it is posting.

so doing anything in your bios or reseating the ide cables is fruitless.

If windows sees the drive but the drive won't read anything, burnt cds or manufacturer cds, then you have a bad cd-rom drive is all. They do go bad from time to time. If you have another computer in your house, take the cd-rom out of the other one and temporarily connect it to yours and see if that one works, if it does, then you know your drive is bad, if you wanna be absolutely sure, put your drive in the other computer and see if it works in it.

But dont call for tech support...they will make you run the diagnostic cd which takes aobut 4 hours....

I am doubting that this SOB is bad because it miraculously stopped working when I installed Norton. I might just have to boot up windows with the CD in and put the cd as the main boot device, see if it picks up that way. If it does I will just have to rebuild XP and hope it works like that.
