Default How can I change my IP address-this is an emergency - 09-20-2004, 10:39 AM

I just joined a different message board and my account is still up for activation by the mods. But some asshole is already flaming me and he posted my email address and my IP address too. I didn't want that info put out there. But I can't edit my profile yet either.

Now i'm freaked out cause my paypal account is connected to my email. I already changed my email password but short of that what else can I do? Just deactivate my email address? Or just sue that son of a bitch? Any help would be great guys.

You can't sue him. You signed the thing when you registered.

I know I probably can't but how did they find out that information? I can't even post a response or edit my profile yet.

he most likely posted a fake IP, how the hell did he find it? is he a forum mod? thats just abusing the mod rights. you cant change your router IP unless you contact your ISP, unless you dont have a router. you could release renew your IP.

if you have windows XP:
Start > Run > Command

ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew

if you have anything before XP, not sure about 2kpro though

Start > Run > winipcfg

hit the button release, hit the button renew.

Hold on...I think it might be some prank. I logged out and checked the board and it seems to be happening to everybody on that board. All the threads about me are gone and most of the posts are dated April 1st. Some april fools joke. If it is a joke I don't know how they did it, but it scared the hell out of me.

I use it through my checking account (debit card) But I won't say how much I have in it, but it's quite a bit. If anybody got access to it they'd be happy...and I would not.

That's why it freaked me out. There are some smart nerds and freaks out there. And I don't want them figuring out anything about me, especially how they can get to my money.

But back to the IP thing, I don't have a router, just a DSL modem. Is there a way I can hide my IP without changing it?

whats the big deal if someone knows your IP? everytime you visit a website, a gameserver, or anytype of server your IP is logged and anyone with mod/admin can see your IP. out of all the servers out there..id sure a lot of people are able to see your ip. if you have a good firewall, chances are there is nothing that can happen to you by someone knowing your ip. also, how is someone able to get access to your paypal account just with your email and ip? oOo:

Why would you use your checking account anyway. A credit card would offer you a higher degree of protection if some one was able to obtain your info.
Your just totally fucked if it's your debit account.

/release /renew does not work for changing an IP. When you lease an IP that lease runs for as long as you have that ISP usually. If you are logged off for long period of time then it is possible to receive a new one, but you need to know how long the lease is for and when to release it. Every time you log in to the ISP, or your modem is connected for cable, the lease resets.

Dial up is the exception, and some DSL companies still allow you to change your IP by resetting the modem, but most don't.
