Hells-Angel took care of it pretty well without getting to detailed. It is merely a bullet that lights up when you fire it. The reason it lights up is so that the gunner can see where his bullets are going. This comes very useful for fighter pilots.

actually the bullets they were using on d-day were wooden so I dont see how they made tracers I have a quote from a d-day book right here

Except for Blank Firing/Training purposes, I've never ever heard of a "Wooden Bullet." And the Principal is completly backwords. I think the Old soldier just has a couple memories of equipment mixed up.

A Tracer round is a normal bullet, with the rear cast and formed differently to except a small amount I highly visably burning compound that is ignited by the propellent charge.. To say the least.

You will most likely have done an experiment in Science class with Barium and Aluminium, I remember doing one and damn is that shit bright !!
