Default I Have a Cable and i Still LAG?!?! - 08-12-2002, 05:50 PM

I just bought my cable modem a week or so ago, and before i got it i ran on a 56k modem with no problems. But now that i got my cable up and running my game seems to lag even if i create my own server? And i dont think it is my graphics card(8mg S3 prosavage)because before my game ran flawlessly. Soo it has me stumped i tried about everything tweaking my settings, patches. if u have any advice or anything that could be usefull. It would be great if u could post it.

The system requirements on the box say that you need at least a 16MB video card.

16 MB OpenGL-capable video card with DirectX 7.0-compatible driver

It depends on your definition of lag. If you have a ping of 500, the game will run choppy. If you have a ping of 50 and a crappy computer, the game will still run choppy. However, a good connection coupled with a good computer will give you a nice, smooth game.

What is your definition of fine. Like what is your avg. fps? I have a 16 mb vid card and usually I get pings below 100 but I know if I get a 32 mb or 64 mb my game would run excellent.

Ok, start off by answering a few questions:

Did you change from '56k' to 'Cable' in the Multiplayer Options?

Also, what kind of lag is this? Is there a connection problem symbol near the buttom of the screen? Does it say 999 ping or something like that when you press tab? If not, it's your pc, not the connection.

Refresh your internet servers. Then, click on the 'ping' button (this will put the servers with the best ping times on top). How do the pings look like there (are they between 50-100?)?

When you play a game, do you have lag once every hour (rarely) or every few minutes (a lot)?

When you -download- something from a stable server, after about 60 seconds, do the download speeds still go up and down?

If they do there must be something wrong with your connection. It should be stable. You should contact your ISP (Internet Service Provider) and tell them about it. If they don't do anything about it keep bugging them. Otherwise, change the provider (if there are others in the area).

Also, you should download a few tweaks from dslreports.com.

Yes I Changed it from 56k to Cable

Its the kind of lag that is not associated with the ping. Which it is Pc related

Yes the pings are between 50-100.

I get lag about every few minutes.

And yes my connection is stable.

There is no external video card. But your card is extremely unbalanced with your processor! You should really upgrade it, it's not very hard. If your dad don't want, you can go at a computer shop and pay someone to do it. Upgrading your video card would be a very good thing.

For the lag, you say it was running great with your 56k and now it lag. Did the game ran better before you get the cable? If so, is your cable modem connected with a USB port or in a network card?

USB often cause some troubles. It's always better and more stable qhen the modem is connected in a network card.
