A company commander at the Korea Army Training Center (KATC) in Nonsan, South Chungcheong Province, forced conscripts in basic training to eat human feces, it has emerged belatedly.

Military authorities arrested the commander, 28-year-old Capt. Lee, but the brutal punishment is likely to have wider repercussions, with high-ranking training center officials unable to dodge responsibility.

The Army said Thursday it had arrested Capt. Lee, a company commander with the 3rd Regiment of the training center's 29th Battalion, on charges of having forced conscripts to eat human feces because he was unhappy with the way the bathrooms had been cleaned.

On January 10, Lee discovered during an inspection of the center’s bathrooms that two of twenty sit-down toilets had not been flushed. Witnesses say he went to the barracks and told 192 conscripts to stick their fingers in the feces and put them in their mouths.

An Army investigation revealed that about half the men did so and pretended to taste the excrement, but few actually consumed it. The soldiers were in their fifth week of a six-week training period. The incident came to light later through a letter sent to a friend by one of the conscripts.

The Army has assembled an investigation team led by the Army headquarters' inspector. In an announcement Thursday, the Army said it was shocked and outraged that one of its officers committed an act that was both “inexplicable and intolerable.”[/quote:4c6ac]

When I went through C&E School in 29 Palms there were some ROK Marines that were in training. They wouldn't talk much with us because thier Sgt. ordered them not to and they said he might kill them if they disobeyed.
