Yeah man, I know that feeling. On some servers I get like 120 and everybody else is getting 50-80. I suppose you know that there are many many factors that increase or decrease ping figures. Geographical distance from the host, video cards, RAM, lots of crap affects what pings you get. I know how pissed off you are, because I get pissed when 56Kers are getting better ping than my damn cable. It doesn't happen often though. If your problem persists over a few days, contact your ISP and ask why the hell their cable service sucks ass. There's really nothing you can do about it.

You can oftentimes double your speed by changing some settings in Windows, go to dslreports.com

http://www.dslreports.com/tweaks
and
http://www.dslreports.com/stest/0

Download some of the tweaks there (almost all PC's are made for dial up connections, these tweaks change many registry settings).

Also, how are your download speeds?

I used to have DSL, downloads usually around 50k/s, with my Cable I get 200-250k/s on the average, so yes, I consider it 4 times faster (but that depends on your provider, among a few other factors).

Also, even with my connection there are not a lot of servers where my ping is below 100.

Download this program:
http://www.udpsoft.com/eye/

It's much better than gamespy, and helps you find the best servers. Just click on 'ping' and select the servers with the best pings. Maybe you're just joining 'any' server. Don't.

Tweaking may fix
Slow download speeds
Download slower than upload speed
Skipping in TCP streaming video/audio
Blank web pages
Connection issues to some sites
Tweaking will not fix
Packet loss
Multiplayer games over UDP
Your ping time<-----------
Regular PC freezes

This is from dslreports. [/b]

nothings wrong with 120-150, i get about that on t the aa.com server and it doesnt slow me down. hell i get like 250 on those BarryWorld servers in the UK and i do decent there too.

For Example:

see, overseas server(UK) i had the worst ping but still managed to steal top score. Ping ain't everything.

you'll get used to it. i usually get 150ish on aa.com and anywhere from 40-80 on a t1 tribes server 200 miles away.

if i can own with those ping times, anyone can  notice i said own and not [OWN] so i'm really talking about being good. best not to confuse those.

are you ok?

yes...ping times vary, dont be discouraged. the amounts which you are stating generally are fine. dont expect uber connections all the time.

Is everybody forgetting something here?

Distance to server? Number of hops between your comp and the server?
ISP?

do a tracert to the aa.com server and see what the hops look like.

stupid DSL reports, it gave me amazing numbers on the speed tests, but here was a the thing, i was on a seconal t1, as in the t1 was spread through about 25 computer labs, although it sounded nice cnet gave me speeds at the time compariable to less than 56k. The tweaks may help but i tend to stay away from the speed tests at DSL reports.

Getting the tweaks from DSL reports decreased my ping by 30 on the average.

If you have Roadrunner I feel for you.

Roadrunner is well known for their poor routing when it comes to latency. If I want to connect to a computer 4 miles from my house which is in Milwaukee, RR routes the packets through Dallas! 2200 miles of fiber for a 4-mile distance. When I connect to a Chicago server, the packets go through New York! It wasn't always this way. RR used to peer with many more providers earlier this year. Then for whatever reason, they droped many of them and my ping went from 50 to 150. Go to http://www.samspade.org and download Sam Spade 1.14 and do a traceroute to the server in question. By looking at the DNS names, you'll get an idea of where your packets are traveling. Then you can voice your concerns with the cable company. Good Luck...

I've never had any problems with Road Runner. There are usually at least 30 AA servers with pings under 100, I can usually get 40-60 on a few severs.

Again, download the All Seeing Eye, Gamespy is inaccurate.
