In terms of engines, id say doom 3 shits all over source, ive heard the source engine best described as an engine dating from 2002 with a lot of shader support tossed in. At the same time source is more moddable than the doom 3 engine, one modder working on a doom 3 mod stated that without the source code it was only possible to make mods that resembled doom 3 with the lighting etc.

Source has those stuttering bugs which date back to when the game was fitst shown at e3-2003, doom 3 is prety bug free and doesn't have anything thats as obvious as the stuttering that source suffers from.

I think source is more of an engine for here and now and can be expanded on pretty easy, doom 3 is an engine that will be around longer and probably get used for more retail games. Id love to see a ww2 game using that engine.

People said the same thing about the quake 3 engine, "it cant do large outdoor maps" etc, rtcw and moh:aa proved that theory well wrong with some of their maps, omaha being the first that springs to mind for allied assault. It'll be same with the doom 3 engine, just has a few technical hurdles that they need to work around for larger outdor areas.
