Getting a New Computer? -
08-19-2002, 03:06 PM
If you ever go to get a NEW computer...
Make 100% sure that there are NO INTEGRATED COMPONENTS
Example - a nic card that is "Built In" or "On Board"
This usually means that the nic card is part of the mother board
What happens if you want to upgrade or make a change?
Its a real pain in the ass - they will tell you "Dont Worry"
but do not listen - Spend the extra $$
(you pay more for 100% non-integrated)
Stay away from any computer that has integrated components!
At lease for gaming

It's really not a problem if you have an integrated component, because you can easily shut it off in the BIOS.

Anyhoo imma be making a AMD Athalon 1.4 ghz, 60gb HD, one of those 2 cards i said, and shitload other shit i cant remeber lol. But hey better than BUYING one, make it yourself so you know wtf goes into it.

Well, that's what I do, but not everyone knows how to build one. Also, a Gforce 4 won't cost you that much money, no matter which model you buy, because by the time you build your PC they will have dropped even lower than what they cost now. Just don't buy them in the store, go to pricewatch and find a good outlet, either that, or go to the computer shows. Just make sure you know who you are buying from. That's what I do to save money.

I could build one I think if I really really wanted to , but I don't, so I get mine from Gateway or Dell , Gateway lets you customize them a little more . Are they expensive ? Yes ! But they give you a pretty good warranty and the support is good.

BUILD YOUR OWN -

i built mine...p4 1.8 gig..2 stick of 512...60 gig hard drive..radeon card...my advice to anyone who plans to do the same...be careful of great prices on the net...its looks great...but if you have a problem it might not be as great then...those guys want your visa number...not your phone calls to complain...i recommend buying from a local disributor...youll pay a few extra dollars...but if a problem comes up...you walk in and walk out a replacement part instead tryin to get hold of a company that may not even be there anymore...BUYER BE WARE...just my thoughts on the matter..BUTCHER

I build computers for people...I love doing it!! If anyone wants me to build one for them, let me know...I'll do the actual building for free (or darn close too it...) but of course you'll have to pay for the parts...

The school that I work for get their computers with pretty much everything built in. It sucks !!!! When something breaks, we pretty uch have to send the whole motherboard in for a replacement instead of just changing say the NIC card. It's less work for us, but then we have to hear people bitch because they don't have a computer.

Good advice Butcher, there's only certain items that I buy online or over the phone , everything else , I go out shopping. Of course if you can't find the item you're looking for local then online is a great option to have, but stick with the well known big name stores.
