First I've heard of it. I had to read the story twice because I thought I had misread it the first time. ed:

nein. Until this ruling, a city could only use eminent domain to get landed needed for roads etc. This ruling allows a city to use it because some big shot wants to build a shopping mall. In my opinion if the big shot wants to build his shopping mall so bad, he should pay me whatever I ask for my land or find another place to build.

This is probably going to lead to alot of cities revitalizing "bad" parts of town by letting developers tear down all of the old homes and build their idea of utopia. Sounds good but the price is too steep. It means the loss of true private ownership.

yeah, they used that over here often. I think Disney got the city of Anaheim to close down some shops, fields and tore down some homes for the theme park and its eventual expansion. more recently its been used in the LA area to move people off of their beach front property to make room for a state park. i also think they used the eminent domain laws to build Dodger Stadium. it must be a terrible thing for someone or some group to have the power to actually force you to sell and vacate your own property for as little as a parking structure.

Yea freed of your property if some fat-cat wants it. They do have to give you fair market value. That didn't mean much to a couple of farmers when the Kansas Speedway was built.

The city of Pittsburgh is famous for eminent domain. We've been trying to revitalize our image from being a steel city (meanwhile we haven't had a working steel factory in 30 years). A lot of the run down areas were torn down 10 years ago with much controversy. In Homestead they made malls and new homes on these properties. This might make the ruling national but this definatly has been going on in Pittsburgh for a while. However, I don't think this law is going to hit the US huge, since it is very costly.
