Default CPU UPGRADE? - 08-21-2002, 01:55 PM

Ok, I have had my computer for about three years, and it shows. I was wondering if it would just be easier to buy a whole new computer or just get a cpu upgrade and a new vid card...

HP System Specs:
OS-Windows ME

Processor- 766 megahertz Intel Celeron
32 kilobyte primary memory cache
128 kilobyte secondary memory cache

HardDrive-60gig

Memory-384mb

Display- Intel(R) 82810 Graphics Controller

As you can see, just a generic vid card that came with the computer...

I'm not really looking for the computer to be a pure gaming machinge, more for multi-purpose use.

Any tips, good places to look for deals would be greatly appreciated.

I get a lot of stuff from there. Oh, and if you are going to get a new Motherboard, you might have to buy a new power supply and different memory...so it's up in the air. But I would sell the PC you have, and use that money to buy parts. Usually, people will pay more money just for the complete PC. Then, you put a couple hundred in from your pocket, and you'll have a kick ass computer.

Well, AMD have just announced their 2Ghz (XP2400+) and 2.133Ghz (XP2600+) CPU's and say that they have been shipped to stockists around the world....I hope. The good thing about these CPU's is that they run much cooler than previous "Thoroughbred" cores and overclock extremely well. XP2600+ is capable of getting up to XP3100+ specs which is roughly 2.5Ghz with just normal air cooling from a fan. These new AMD CPU's will ofcourse be cheaper than Intel CPU's as they always are. You best check these out, or check some other AMD CPU's as their prices should have or will be dropping substantially with the release of their new line.

Ofcourse you will need to buy a new Motherboard, Heat sink Fan, Memory...But the differences will be very noticable. Check out AMD, you will save some major cash with these guys.

So how much would a tower cost, I already have everything else, especially video card and sound card and 256 ram but that might have to be re-bought

IMO i would go the pentium 4 route. I have a thunderbird at the minute and im not really impressed with it. Plus the epntiums are a lot more heat resiliant, if theyre over heating they start skipping cpu cycles to underclock the cpu so it can't cook.

You can get a tower for $50 or so easy enough

Depends, most stores in the uk do bundle offers. They will normally put a cpu mainboard and memory together with a discount because you;re buying it in their store.

If you'r going pentium 4 however make sure you get a northwood version as the wimmiate versions are basically defunct.

Shop around and you will most likely get a good deal.
