Is that ... is that... sarcasm ?? Wow, who woulda thought! Johnj, you impress me... biggrin:

Just in case you were linking to what you thought proved your point:

[quote="NZ Code":2463e]THE FIREARMS CODE: describes requirements for safe and responsible firearms use, ownership, and storage. Licence applicants are tested on this information and must achieve over 90% to pass. They must also demonstrate a 100% knowledge of the seven basic rules of firearms safety. Canada and Australia now utilise elements of this New Zealand system.

THE FIREARMS LICENCE: shall only be issued after the applicant has passed tests on knowledge and safe firearms handling, and satisfied Police by meeting the ‘fit and proper person’ criteria. A photo ID licence is valid for 10 years and the Police computer is programmed to alert Police should an entry suggest a licenceholder no longer maintains sufficient standard to possess firearms. [/quote:2463e]

ggkthx, bye. Go play your banjo and preach the gospel of Thomas now...

I've read a bit more and it seems proper persons with specific allowances can have handguns, though it's rare. They usually only allow for rifles and shotguns. Oh well. Trip, I'll welcome you to Canada anytime! biggrin:

If I wanted a pistol badly enough I could go through those steps to get one but I don't want one that bad because there is no need for one. I'd personally have more of a chance of doing harm (accidental or not) than doing good.

Still it's not about my government trusting me enough. It's about me trusting my government enough that they WILL have these necessary restrictions.

...and I still don't understand why such a snarky statement was warranted...

The problem is, you should have the right to defend yourself and property with all reasonable available means: that includes firearms. They are the most efficient way to repel any threat, deter people from committing offences and are a useful tool to overthrow totalitarian regimes, which is something you should keep in mind when your government is systematically banning all firearms. An unarmed populace is a dominated and helpless one. Call me paranoid... *shrug*

We've maintained democracy for over 150 years without any revolutions or anything like that. We're a relatively stable country and yes, I realise that can change.

If I need to defend myself in a revolution, I'll get a rifle or a shotgun. They're considerably easier to get than pistols/automatics, and they can effectively kill people. What would I do with a pistol anyways? I'd probably just shoot myself/it would get stolen and a criminal would use it/Or I'll end up threatening someone with it, whoever pissed me off enough - Then I'll end up in jail being fucked by Mongrel Mob/Maori Power members.

I don't see what you're tryna tell me Sloi....In 19 years I haven't needed a gun....Infact there has been a few situations so far that if a gun was around I could have ended up in a very bad situation.

I have a baseball bat and a real enough looking Glock in my room. I feel I could defend my house/family fine enough with just the bat.
