Default 2 sysystems! - 09-12-2005, 03:20 PM

Ok, my 3rd system is running slow as heck right now i used to game on it really well but it's just so boggy it won't run anything

700 Duron / 768 meg 3200 DDR / ECS K7S5A MB / 20 gig maxtor Hdd

i am thinking it's the cpu, but could it get slower of time? maybe it's the hard drive too? i have no clue any suggestions?

and on my 2nd system, i bought a Abit mb with a 2800 Sep. amd cpu
it installed xp fine, and ran smooth, but the network didn't work at all and i had alot of trouble with the USB on it too, then after about 20 minutes working with it, and constant lock ups it died and wouldn't start up even on multiple monitors...

my friend says i put to much thermal paste on the CPU, when i pulled the HS off, it was everywhere, not on the MB or anything i don't recall but in my handleing of the cpu, i got some on the pins and cleaned it off the best i can...i rma'd the mb hoping it was the problem havn't gotten it back yet and that was over 3 weeks ago.....

could too much thermal paste result in the network / USB failures and eventual system shutdown?

thanks guys for any help

I went through 3 Abit motherboards before I got 1 that worked. The first one the network and the sound were bad and the second one had bad network. The third board has been working fine.

whats your network interface like ? onboard / pci , what ?

usb ... did you install the correct chipset drivers?

make sure you have everything seated firmly ...

if i were you and was having all this trouble i would start a fresh install and

1. set the bios to defaults . theres usually a deal in there to do so ... since you are having trouble with usb i would check to make sure usb is turned on for all devices in the bios. also, if your network interface is on the mb make sure it is turned on in the bios also.

2. remove all cards and do the install with just the video. add the cards only after you have windows up and running.

after you have installed windows

1. install the correct chipset drivers for your mb
2. reboot.
3. install sp2 / windows updates
4. reboot
4. video drivers
5. reboot
6. sound
7. reboot
8. add the other cards one by one installing drivers when needed.

^ you can try running the box without the other cards in it for a while and see if you have any crashes.

you might also want to check for bios updates. for abit they have a utility where you can do it from windows ...

i have the abit is7 and havent had a single problem with it ...

yeah the leads were in properly, i even tried the onboard usb and the one where you have 2 additional usbs neither would work correctly

network was onboard and the only thing pci/agp was the vid card.....
